Impetigo is a localised infection usually found on the face, neck or hands of children. It is generally caused by Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) or a Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) or a combination of both. It is characterised by a yellow crusting rash on a red background.
Steps
- Apply tea tree oil onto the rash three times daily for a week.
- Apply hydrogen peroxide cream (Microcid) three times daily for a week if tea tree oil does not control the infection within a couple of days.
Tips
- Always wash your hands and your child's hands with soap - either normal or anti-bacterial
Warnings
- Your child should stay away from daycare or school until all the crusting scabs are completely dry.
- If the infection is not controlled by these measures, see your doctor as you may need antibiotics.
