Care for Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis affects approximately 15 million people in the United States and is usually seen in babies and young children. Adults may also be diagnosed with atopic dermatitis which is considered a form of eczema. Patients with atopic dermatitis tend to have a strong family history of atopic dermatitis and allergies. The following tips will help ease the scratchiness often associated with this skin condition.


Steps
  1. Do not scratch. If at all possible try not to scratch the affected areas.
  2. Trim nails short to prevent scratching the affected skin.
  3. Wear plastic or rubber gloves when washing dishes or cleaning.
  4. Moisturize. Oily based moisturizes such as Vaseline may be a good choice, follow the medical recommendations given by your provider.
  5. Bathe using a non-perfumed soap.
  6. Bathe using a mild soap such as Cetaphil or Dove.
  7. Bathe less often, follow the the doctor's medical advice concerning bathing frequency.
  8. Bathe using lukewarm to warmish water. Avoid hot water as this may irritate the skin.
  9. Take lukewarm baths using a medically recommended bath oil to help soften skin.
  10. Pat the skin dry using a bath towel. Try not to rub the skin.
  11. Apply medically approved moisturizer after bathing.
  12. Wear cotton clothing. During a particularly nasty episode, wear loose cotton clothing, to help prevent skin irritation.
  13. Try not to sweat. Sweating and changes in skin temperature may cause flare ups.
  14. Reduce stress and anxiety as they can help exacerbate the condition.
  15. Manage depression as this may also cause flare ups of atopic dermatitis.
  16. Use medications as prescribed by your health care giver.



Tips
  • Studies have shown breast fed babies are less likely to develop atopic dermatitis.
  • Avoid known skin irritants.
