Wisdom Teeth: Surgery or Pulled?
I've been informed that I need to get my wisdom teeth out; most importantly the top left one in particular is decayed. It's fully in though, due to the fact that I had back teeth pulled during the braces days, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if I'll have to pay for the surgery situation or if I can just get it pulled?

due to the way the roots are they have to be surgically removed.

I got mine pulled. One like you are talking about and two bottom ones that were only half in and had been like that for 10 years. All of them were easily pulled.

You will have to talk to your dentist about that. Some dentist are willing to pull wisdom teeth, but sometimes the teeth are so impacted (coming in the wrong way), the teeth have to be removed by an Oral Surgeon

I've had 'em done both ways.

I think I preferred the surgery. I was waiting for him to take the tooth out, and then I noticed there was thread hanging out of my mouth. He was sewing me up already.

Plus, with surgery, I got better painkillers. With extraction, all I got was Motrin.

i would let them put you to sleep i got 7 of mt teeth pulled out while awake but today they put me under and it was a lot better then being awake so go for it good luck

You say that it's fully erupted so I would assume that you could have it pulled out under a local anaesthetic in the chair (you could still opt for surgery if you wanted). Surgery is generally only used for very nervous patients or those with partially erupted or unerupted wisdom teeth or those with impacted wisdom teeth

The dentist will have to give your mouth an xray to determine if it can be pulled or requires surgery.
I had mine pulled with no drama at all.
You will need some strong pain killers for when the anaesthetic wares off but you'll be fine.
As for the cost, see if there is a Dental Hospital near you where you can go and get a dentist in training. It sounds scary but they are fully supervised while they do the procedure and because you are helping them to learn you get a very low bill. I went to one and it was very cheap, and like I said no problems.
Good luck.

Please consult with an oral surgeon. All 4 of my wisdom teeth were surgically removed at once. I was asleep during the procedure.

I have had wisdom teeth surgery twice because they were afraid my jaw would shift so 3 one time and 1 the other surgery is definetly worth it and you do not have to be awake when they do it

mighty_power7
you most commonly have to have surgery for wisdom teeth to come out, but it's not like regular surgery where you must be under anaesthetic. they give you a choice of laughing gas, a numbing shot, or total anaesthesia (which i recommend! i had total anaesthesia and it was wonderful - very quick and no pain during it!). a lot of my friends have had their wisdom teeth out and they have all had surgery for it.

Sam
It's hard to say without seeing your tooth, but if it was erupted, an upper wisdom tooth can almost always be removed without a surgical approach.
