Finding the right 12 step program. Steps
- Hit the internet/yellow pages/local health nurse and request find information on what's available in your area.
- Make contact before hand and request if you can sit in on a session without participating. See if you think it's a good fit for you.
- Inquire about success rates, seek documented proof, preferably from an outside source. (The rates are likely to be rather low, i.e. 5-15%. If a group is claiming success rates higher than these they're likely misleading you.)
- Be advised that traditional 12 step programs, based on the AA model are somewhat religiously motivated, if you're uncomfortable with this, other treatment options may be more suited for you.
- If you decide to try a group, make a real commitment to your goal; but expect setbacks, and remember your choice to change your behaviours, especially after a setback, so you can return to group and continue your treatment.
Tips
- Most individuals must make numerous attempts to break an addiction and achieve a long term change in their behaviours, be ready to try, try again.
