Survive When Trapped Under Debris

If you are ever, for any reason, trapped under debris, here are some ways to help survive.

Steps
  1. Try to stay in the position you started in. Unnecessary movement can cause the debris to move, which is extremely hazardous.
  2. Conserve food and water. If available, limit yourself to just enough so you're not hungry. If you are ever trapped for a long amount of time, this will be helpful.
  3. Try not to breathe in dust or dirt; this can make it hard to breathe.
  4. Don't panic, especially when help comes. Panic will make things worse.
  5. Always keep a bag ready with some water, some dry fruits or food that lasts for days like biscuits etc and some tools in your home so that it may be of help to you in case you are trapped and are close to your bag!
  6. Make use of mobile phone if available.

Tips
  • Try to not get trapped in the first place, if you don't get trapped, you won't need to use this.

Warnings
  • Don’t panic. Panicking makes everything worse when you are trapped.
  • Realize that if you have been injured, debris may be staunching the flow of blood. When the debris is lifted from you, you may experience a sudden gushing of blood and this can quickly turn to shock. Most rescue teams will have medical assistance at hand; if, however, you are being rescued by friends, it is important to have them understand that this may be a consequence and to have them ready a means for restricting your blood flow and to get you to medical help quickly.
