Avoid Drowning

What to do before Lifeguard saves you? If you fall into the water and cannot swim, these plain directions help you keep afloat until some aid arrives.

Steps
  1. Understand that people are drowned by raising their arms above water, the unbuoyed weight of which depresses the head; all other animals have neither motion nor ability to act in a similar manner, and therefore swim naturally.
  2. Learn that when you fall into deep water, do not elevate your hands, this will help you to rise to the surface and continue stay there.
  3. Move your hands under the water in any manner you please, to make your head rise high enough to allow you to breathe.
  4. Move your legs as in the act of walking (or rather of walking upstairs), your shoulders will rise above the water, that way you use less exertion with hands, or apply them to other purposes.
  5. Constantly but gently move your hands and feet in the opposite direction that you desire to move in order to push against the water to propel yourself.

Tips
  • Stay calm.
  • Refrain from breathing while under the water.
  • Keep in mind that a person’s body is lighter than the water.
  • Learn to swim when young.

Warnings
  • Avoid kicking and splashing the water as violently as possible, this action will make sinking easier.
  • People start to drown when they start panicking, therefore, they end up with an act of drinking water which will only allow them to be heavier than they really are. This will weigh them down further.
