A pressure bandage can hold the cotton close to the wound and apply pressure, to stop the bleeding and allow blood to begin clotting. Steps
- Wipe the wound with an alcohol gauze pad to prevent infection.
- Place some cotton balls or dressing over the wound.
- Use an extra hand to hold the dressing in place while the bandage is wrapped around.
- Cover up the area by wrapping the roller bandage around it. Be generous.
- Tie off the end of the roller bandage by either tucking it under or attaching a safety pin to two parts.
Tips
- Easiest if done with two people - the injured one holding the dressing in place, and the helper wrapping the bandage around.
- Make sure everything you use is sterile.
- If pressure does not stop the wound from bleeding, seek professional medical assistance or advice.
Warnings
- If a roller bandage is too tight, circulation may be cut off.
- May restrict movement if done over joints, but is necessary.
