Rescue Someone Who Has Fallen Into a Well

Many a small child has fallen into a well and since wells are meant for drinking water, one can expect local persons hanging around it and also small kids playing near it. All of this poses a risk of falling into the well.

Steps
  1. Call down the well and see if the person is alive and conscious. Ask if he or she is injured. If you do not get a reply, it may be because the person is unable to hear or has fallen unconscious, or even has drowned. Do not give up hope, however, and presume that the person can be rescued.
  2. Get help. Call the emergency line (generally 911 (US), 000 (Australia), 111 (NZ), 999 (UK)) and ask for the fire department. Give your location so they can come quickly. Make sure that an ambulance is on the way too.
  3. Call for help using clear diction. Someone nearby may be able to offer assistance.
  4. Keep with them by talking to them. If they are conscious tell them that help is on the way and that they should not panic. Even if you do not get a response, keep talking as they may be able to hear you but not be able to respond for some reason, such as pain. It will help them to know that somebody is there and that help is on the way.

Tips
  • As it is quite a frightening time for the person down the well, try not to talk about the situation. Once you've reassured them that help is coming, talk about everyday subjects if they aren't replying, just make one sided conversation, talk about your hobbies, what you're doing tomorrow, fun things that have happened to you, etc, but avoid taking about bad accidents you've had: "One time I drank so much Ribena that it poisoned my blood and I went into a coma and nearly died", as this will just depress the person further.

Warnings
  • Do not allow kids to play around wells that are not properly covered.
  • Do not attempt to rescue the child yourself, as you too could end up stuck in the well. Make sure that only proper authorities rescue the child. They have the requisite equipment
