Swallow Bitter Medicine

No one likes to take medicine, and when the taste going down is bad, it makes the dislike double. So how do you stomach that nasty thing that is suppose to make you feel better? The following are a few tips to help you to take bitter medicine.

Steps
  1. If the medication says that you can take it with food, you can dull the taste by grinding it into a cup of jelly or honey. The sweet taste of the food will help distract your taste buds from the nasty taste of the pill.
  2. If you can't or don't want to grind up the medication, try to put the pill in a wad of bread, or peanut butter and swallow it whole. The bread and peanut butter will cause your mouth to salivate so the pill become easier to swallow.
  3. Take the medication with a glass of milk. It will help dull the taste as well.
  4. If none of these help, then ask your doctor if there is a different brand of the medication. Just like a doughnut from Krispy Kreme doesn't taste like one from the baker down the street, the same medication probably wont taste the same from different companies. Similarly, you might prefer a medication in the form of a pill, rather than a liquid or suspension, if you dislike bitter medicine.
  5. Try to hold your nose as you take the medication. Your olfactory glands and your taste buds work together, so this will help to mask the taste as you take it.
  6. Try to put the pill or liquid or gel as far back in your mouth as possible, avoiding your tongue. If it doesn't touch your tongue, you won't taste it.
  7. If that doesn't work then the best idea is to "buck up" and take it. Your health is important enough to sacrifice a few taste buds here and there.

Tips
  • Take honey after bitter medicine.
  • Fill your mouth with the beverage (I like juice), THEN add the pill. I see a lot of people put the pill in first and suffer the bad taste until they grab their drink.

Warnings
  • Never take medication that isn't prescribed to you.
  • Ask your doctor if these methods of taking the medication are acceptable. Food can interrupt and/or react badly to certain medications.
