Light sleeper, day sleeper, noisy neighborhood? Make comfortable, custom-fitted earplugs from everyday items and enjoy quiet, restful sleep. Don't leave home without these! Steps
- Pinch off a small piece of cotton ball, about what you'd estimate would fit in your ear.
- Cut a piece of the plastic wrap large enough to wrap around the cotton piece and leave a little tail. Wrap it snugly, but not so tight that you crush the cotton.
- Insert the wrapped cotton into your ear to see how it fits. Add or remove a little of the cotton ball, until you have a snug, comfortable fit.
- Wind the rubber band several times around the end of the ball, making a little tail. Be sure it's tightly closed. Now trim the plastic wrap close to the rubber band, leaving just enough so that the band won't easily slip off. There's your earplug!
Warnings
- Keep a stash of the supplies. Every two or three weeks the plastic will start to thin, and the cotton will compress and won't form as good a seal in your ear.
- Careful where you leave them. A motel maid could see them on a bedside table and call the manager because they look like little drug bags.
- When sleeping with earplugs, ensure that your alarm clock is loud enough that it will still wake you up in the morning.
- If you make them too small they may get stuck deep in your ear, if this happens wait a few hours for the natural movement of ear to push the object outwards. If you can't remove it after a few hours, call a doctor.
- Ears are often very prone to infection, so one should always be cautious. Things placed in one's ears should ALWAYS be extremely clean. You should ALWAYS wash your hands thoroughly before creating these. Swabbing the finished product with alcohol is also a good idea.
