Is it safe to just double my medication?
I take anti-depressant Efexor (xl) 150mg daily but I feel really low. Is it safe to just double my dose until I can get to a doctor?
Thanks.

hopebrendenply
No please don't. Take vitamin B complex 100 according to directions n the bottle. It helps elevate the mood and is good for the nerves. It can be purchased at grocery stores and drug stores.
My very best to you,
Hope

Depends on how long you have been taking it.

Only your Doctor can increase or decrease the dose. Do not do yourslf.

mine
Robin, don't do that. I am on lexapro, and wanted so badly to take 2 or 3 extra pills bcuz i was so sad and didn't feel like waiting anymore, and just wanted the drugs to do it for me. I got to my psych, and he boosted the dose for me. Just hang in there, you can't diagnose yourself to say how much more you need.

Never, ever change the dosage of any medication or combine it with anything else, esp over the counter stuff until you have spoken to your mental health provider who is prescribing your meds/treatment. Many of those meds work by changing brain wave patterns.....too much can have a disastrous effect....my ex caused seisures and blackouts by doing what you propose.......if it gets to bad contact your dr/therapist/psychologist or a mental health clinic, hospital...there's a professionalout there who can help. Never self medicate, ever...Good Luck and hang in there....

carolyn
No.
1. it can seriously harm your liver
2. you can feel withdrawl symptoms badly when you go back to the normal dose, including physical symptoms mimicking heroin withdrawl

can you just talk to your dr instead of changing any drug doses? Would he give you a phone session?

You shouldnt change your medications without talking to your doctor since he knows what else you are on, what your symptoms are, etc.

No way, please dont. Talk to someone who cares. e mail me if you like. I will try to help you no prob. Just wait to see what Doc says.

Gypsydayne
You shouldn't make any medicinal changes unless you speak with your Dr. Usually, if you call into the office & relay the problem you're having, the nurse will consult with the Dr. and give you a call back. Don't do anything without consulting your Dr. because he/she knows best.

NO!!

Going from 150mg to 300mg flipped me to manic and got me a new dx. You do not want to make that move on your own! Effexor plays with different neurotransmitters at higher doses.

If you want more info, try this site: http://www.crazymeds.us

frenziedmonkey
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Normal adult dosages of Effexor are between 75 and 225 mgs per day. If you double it you're way over that.

I know it's Friday but if you surround yourself with nice people this weekend I'm sure you can get through til Monday morning. If the meds aren't working there may be more to it than just the dosage hon, may be clashing with something else or just not the one for you.

x

Snow White
Never self-medicate/play around with your dosage. The consequences can be severe and not always visible straight away. Try to keep yourself safe and make it through the weekend a step at a time. If you feel really bad try calling the NHS Direct helpline or get yourself to your nearest A&E department where there should be a duty psychiatrist (or some other mental health clinician) you can speak to. Please don't mess around with your meds without consulting your prescribing clinician.
Take Care x
