Stop Scratching a Mosquito Bite

So you've gotten bitten by a mosquito, and can't stop scratching? Don't worry, with this wiki, you can stop scratching!

Steps
  1. Put socks on your hands. This way, if you scratch your bite, then it won't actually scratch it. And if you or the patient doesn't appreciate sitting with socks on your or their hands for extended periods of time, play a game! You can make a sock puppet playhouse, and play with socks on your hands. This is good for children because it distracts them from their bite and focuses their attention on the game.
  2. Apply ointment to the bite. Get a nice anti skin irritation creame, and gently rub it on the area. Be aware that when you touch the bite, it makes it itch more. So make sure you lightly spread the ointment into the skin. Reapply it every two hours. The ointment should chill the bite, so you won't scratch it anymore.
  3. Put ice on the bite. This will numb the bite so you won't be able to feel it itch. Keep the ice on the bite for about half an hour, and then see if you need it again. If the bite no longer itches, there's no point in numbing it.
  4. Distract yourself from the bite. If no treatments seem to help, simply distract yourself as much as possible. Watch television, read a book, or go on the computer. Catch yourself thinking about or staring at your bite -- preparing to scratch it -- and stop it before you start.
  5. Try using some lotion, don't let your skin to be dry.

Warnings
  • If the lump does not disappear within two weeks of you not scratching it, you may want to see a doctor in case it isn't a mosquito bite. It could be a spider bite, and some of these require medical attention to disappear.
  • If you live in a country where you are likely to get lots of mosquito bites, remember that scratching them can cause infection and make the bite much worse. Best not to sacrifice your health for the sake of a few minute's relief from itching.
