Why is my 5 yr old's fever continuing for a week now?
My daughter has had a fever for a week now. It spiked to 103.5 last night. It spiked to 104 the previous night as well as a couple of nights ago. During the day, it ranges from 100-102; earlier in the week during the day it ranged from 103-104. She tested positive for strep throat. Chest x ray and blood work came out fine, but that was 5 days ago. The pedi switched her from penicillin to zithromax. She has A LOT of nasal and chest congestion. Pedi is not sure why this is lingering so long. We are very worried. Here's more information about my daughter: This morning her fever was 99 and has remained that way. (It is 3:00 PM) Last time she had Tylenol/Motrin was 4:00 AM so we're happy about this. And we brought her to the pediatrician again. He said her throat looks absolutely horrible. Tonsils are large, swollen and full of pus. He wants her to stay on Zithromax and if there's no improvement by Fri. he will change to Clindymicin. He said it is possible she has mono. So we're still confused but at least her fever is not spiking during the day. Say a prayer that tonight won't bring it up so high again!

surprised she wasnt admitted, take her to an urgent care or ER

if she still has a fever then you need to take her to the Hospital immediately.. there is obviously something else going on there....

Sometime antibiotics themselves can cause a fever, but that side affect usually goes away. You need to get her seen again either in the Emergency room or walk in clinics, step can lead to menengitis so get her checked. Also you must have given her some aspirin or Tylenol for her fever I would hope as antibiotics do nothing for a fever.Get her seen again,as running that high a temp for that long is very dangerous!God Bless

Run to a new doctor, having a fever that long is not normal. If you have too take her to the emergency room. Find a new doctor, your doctor should have advised you to another doctor to check her out if he can not find cause. Hurry, get off computer and go girl, she can get brain damage from high fevers.
