Colgate:

Gingivitis or Bleeding Gums
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease which, left untreated, may develop into periodontitis.**

Colgate Total® helps reduce gingivitis. To learn more about gingivitis

Stains
Tobacco, red wine and certain foods can stain teeth.
Colgate Total® Whitening effectively whitens teeth and gently removes stains.

Plaque
Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth. It is the main cause of cavities and gingivitis and can harden into tartar if not removed daily.

Colgate Total® contains an antibacterial ingredient. Its patented forumla attaches to your teeth to help reduce plaque.

Whitening
Some whitening toothpastes work to remove surface stains on your teeth that naturally occur over time. They have special chemical or polishing agents that help remove stains.

Cavities
Cavities are tooth decay. Tooth decay is heavily influenced by what we eat, how well we take care of our teeth and the presence of fluoride in our water and toothpaste.

Colgate Total® provides outstanding protection against cavity formation and tooth decay.

Tartar Build-up
Tartar, sometimes called calculus, is plaque that has hardened on your teeth. Tartar can also form at the gumline.

Colgate Total® helps prevent plaque from forming into hard to remove tartar build-up.

Weak Enamel
Enamel is the outer layer of the tooth. It envelops and protects the main portion of the tooth. Weak enamel is caused by a build-up of plaque bacteria which quickly deteriorates tooth enamel.

Fluoride in Colgate Total® strengthens weak enamel.

Tender Gums
Gum inflammation is one of the first signs of gingivitis and if left untreated may lead to periodontitis**.

Colgate Total® removes sticky plaque bacteria that cause the red, tender and swollen gums that characterize gingivitis.

Bad Breath

CONCLUSION:
Use any they all do the same thing.

Furqan
Hi.
Colgate is known to be the best toothpaste because of its ingredients and the whiteness of teeth you get as a result from brushing with Colgate.
Take care.

better against cavities?

I'd say Crest pro-health. The only toothpaste with stannous fluoride. D best against cavities.

Jerry M
Baking soda—it neutralizes decay acids and acts as a mild abrasive.

Jerry M is right as I'm pretty sure in England at least that they used to use baking soda or soot, i.e.ashes from the open fire long before toothpaste was invented to clean teeth. Or it pretty much depended on where you lived as to what was used. Other oldfashioned tooth cleaners:
http://www.toothpasteworld.com/history.htm

Modern toothpastes are all pretty much the same and fluoride is a questionable ingredient as is Triclosan. You may be better off with one you purchase from a health store with an extract of Salvadora Persica (miswak), which is anti-plaque and aloe vera, which is soothing and anti-inflammatory for the gums. You sometimes also find complementary mouthwashes.

Best wishes.
