Swallow Vitamins

Swallowing vitamins can be daunting. Many people comment that they get stuck going down, they choke, or they can only swallow something very tiny. Here are some tips to help those vitamins food supplements go down easily, and even by the hand full.

Steps
  1. Start with just one vitamin.
  2. Pull the tongue downward on the palette and place the vitamin about 2/3 of the way back toward the throat.
  3. Tilt the head back and take a big swig of a THICK liquid.
  4. Keep the head tilted back until the vitamins food supplements are down the hatch.

Tips
  • Of utmost importance is the liquid with which they are swallowed. Thin liquids such as water make the throat think it can remain thin itself. Thick liquids such as shakes, juices, and even milk (buttermilk is terrific for this) make the throat open larger and the vitamins go down easily.
  • Tilting the head backwards makes a clear channel for the vitamins and liquid to go down easily. Many people try to swallow without doing this, and the throat is at a 90 degree angle, thus causing somewhat of an obstruction.
  • Many people place the liquid in the mouth first, then tilt the head (making sure the throat is closed off), drop the vitamins into the mouth, and then swallow.
  • As with anything, swallowing vitamins just takes some practice. And remember, the throat has muscles and automatic reflexes which allow for swallowing and not getting things into the lungs.
  • Using thick liquids or shakes for taking vitamins will help eliminate the icky tummy that often follows taking vitamins.
