When you have a broke or sprained finger, why do they tape to another finger?
Yesterday, a sprained my right pinky finger. I went to the hospital and all they did was tape it to my ring finger and put a splint under then. How does this help?

gillianprowe
It stops you from sticking it in your ear or up your nose???

Banichi
The bones in your hand/foot are small and hard to manipulate into straightness, unlike say, a femur. Taping it and letting it heal crooked is generally about as good as trying to actually straighten it out.

Its true that it is being used as a splint, but instead of using a regular splint it is attached to another finger to allow the fractured finger to regain a normal fingers shape.

It acts as a splint to hold it straight and for it to heal better.

ibu guru
Try crooking one finger without crooking another and you will immediately see why a broken finger is taped to the adjacent finger!

It provides better protection -- harder to bend, bash, damage the injured finger when it is taped to another.

If it is taped to another finger it is immobilized and it gains support and rest so the finger is not free moving and as vulnerable... Therefore it heals quicker and safer.

Teri D
You "buddy tape" it because the other finger protects it by acting as a splint.

With your good hand, extend the fingers and thumb straight. Starting with the thumb, fold down each finger in turn until the thumb, index, middle and ring finger are all down. Once you get to the middle finger, there's already a pressure on the pinky to move. Tying the ring and pinky fingers together reduces the risk of straining the pinky and gives the best chance for quick healing.
