Do Exercises for TMJ Treatment

Many people suffer with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) symptoms without any idea that they have the problem. One way to reduce discomfort of TMJ is through exercises for TMJ treatment.


Steps
  1. Look for symptoms. If you are reading this article about “exercises for TMJ Treatment”, you or someone you know may be experiencing the some of the following TMJ symptoms. Pain in your jaw joint being the most common TMJ symptom, others are:
    • Radiating pain in your face, jaw and neck
    • Stiffness of jaw muscles

  2. Exercise for two five-minute periods per day. The pain caused by TMJ symptoms can be because of several reasons. Exercise basically helps to relax and ease your jaw muscles so that it can get back to normal gradually. Moreover this is an inexpensive way to TMJ treatment as well as being a non-invasive method. Also, it is safe when you have the proper guidance.
  3. Do not count talking and eating as exercise! TMJ exercise mainly uses gentle movements that are focused. Look at some of the popular ones:
    • If our jaws click:
      • Close our mouth allowing your tongue to touch your palate. With your mouth closed, move your tongue back. Now slowly open our mouth until your tongue moves away. Let your mouth be open till a count of ten. This is repeated twice.
    • If your jaws tend to shift sideways:
      • Practice slowly open and close our mouth, careful to close it properly without shifting to the side. Repeat five times.
    • Easing tension:
      • Stretching exercises by opening your mouth downward and closing it slowly works.
  4. Ask your health care provider to suggest a particular exercise for your TMJ treatment. Exercises will stop your jaw from clicking and make the muscles stronger so that your jaws move easily without putting a strain on the joints, which causes the pain.



Tips
  • Combined with exercise, occasional hot or cold compresses on the jaw area can soothe your TMJ symptoms.
  • Exercises for TMJ treatment are a great alternative to surgery and drugs that can have side effects.
