How long does a severe sprained ankle take to heal?
I Missed a stair and landed on my ankle wrong on the 26th of February, it popped really loud i couldnt walk at first i figured it was broken. I was able to get up and walk, the next morning it was really sore and i had a very hard time getting going, but i just got a promotion at work so for the next week i was unable to see a doctor and i "toughed it out" i went to the doctors and had it x rayed because after a week it was still swollen and bruised, he gave me a brace and barely any information. Its been 16 days now and nothing has gotten better a simple twist and my ankle throbs for 20 min. im just curios how much longer i have to deal with this. thanks for reading [i always type to much] but any answers help! I'd really like to have another doctor look at that x-ray. Most of the time "sprain" means you've pulled a muscle, and that takes two-four weeks to heal, with most of the swelling and pain gone in two weeks. If, on the other hand, you pulled a tendon or ligament, it will take months to heal BUT, again, the swelling shouldn't last more than a few weeks. Even with a broken bone, most of the swelling and pain should be gone in three or four weeks. My friend had a "sprain" that turned out to be a torn ligament. She went through almost a year of pain before another doctor spotted the (tiny tiny) problem, and it took surgery to fix it. Bottom line, the swelling and pain should've stopped within a month. Take your x-rays and go to a doctor you trust.

A sprain always seems to hurt worse then a break, it could take up to six weeks or more to be fully healed. When you are able keep your foot propped up and put ice (make sure you have a cloth on your skin) on the sprained area, for about 20 minutes every couple of hours, that will help with the swelling which hill help with pain. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.
