Electric fence. It repolarizes your neural pathways so that you aren't depressed any more. An electric fence is made special so it can't kill you. Its perfect for people with depression.

PS-I'm not joking and you can buy the fence chargers at your local feed store.

jeff_is_sexy
There are therapists, phsycologists and a slew of other specialists that can help you with this.

One tip - never take the "shock therapy". My mom got it when she was depressed. She wasn't depressed anymore, but it totally screwed up her memory and physical abilities. Bad idea.

Kster
Meditation is the best method. It helps you to train your brain and realign your physical energy. It's a proven method and I personally attest to it.

Watching sunsets. Trust me on this one. You gotta notice the good stuff in life and make the most out of it while you can. There'll always be bad stuff, but there'll also always be good stuff. And even if 50 bad things happen and only 1 good thing happens...well, that good thing still happened, and it means something.

Exercise is one way to relieve your stress level. It is good for you. Grab some weights and hold them in your hands and shadow box. You just might feel better afterwards. I hope it works for you. ENDORPHINES make us feel good, and exercise releases them. OH BABY.

Aerobic exercise.

Eat nutritious food, exercise a lot (swimming, running, skiing, biking), get plenty of sleep at a regular time each night. Get plenty of sunlight.

See a counselor to work out and emotional issues that might be coming up.

See a psychiatrist to rule out other physical conditions that may be causing depression.

Take it from someone who nearly lost their life from the ravages of depression, real depression, not the I'm feeling down today kind, if you don't want to do something from your above list you are going to be depressed for a long time and it could worsen. Learning to deal with your depression and recovering from it is a process not a cure. Some things work for some people that don't work for others. Without some help though it will only worsen and throw you into a cycle of absolute despair that will be even harder to recover from. I know a lot of people think to go to a psychiatrist is frowned upon or only "for crazy people", it's not. When you have a cold or whatever you go to the doctor. They are just doctors that are more able to help you with your particular illness. You may have to see a few until you find the right one for you. One you click with. Believe me they can help. But don't expect an overnight cure there either because healing properly and finding the root or trigger for your depression can take time. It's not always an easy or quick road back my friend. I'm not going to lie to you like that. In the mean time until you decide the path for you, all I can say is try to stay busy. Too much down time or alone time will see you dwelling on things and you will lose perspective. Stay in touch with your family and friends and don't be afraid to seek their support. If their support is negative, you kepp talking until you find someone that can listen without judgement and give you the support you need. this is an illness that can quickly and unrepentantly take over your life, so please try some options. If you ever need to talk, just email me from my profile and I'll be there to listen and support you however I can. Good Luck and pls don't leave it too long.

Go to your local hospital and help.

1) Do not read newspapers.
Newspapers publish negative stories most of the time. Even in peaceful periods, newspapers will find the worst in humanity and place negative stories on display in order to promote sales and subscribers. Stories focused on War, rebellion, death, destruction, doom and despair abound in the newspapers.
You will not miss any news. Friends, family, and your local air raid siren will keep you informed if your attention is needed. Only pay attention to the things you can control in your life.

Stop reading the newspaper and reduce the negative input to your brain.

2) Turn off your television.
Watching and listening about the horrible economy and the losses associated with War will add to depression. In fact, you guarantee the feeling of helplessness. Helplessness allows depression to nurture. If you really need to watch or listen to these kinds of news stories, promise yourself you will bury yourself in the documentaries that are sure to follow in the next 5 or 10 years. A way you can eliminate most of the negative input to your brain is by setting it aside for a date somewhere in the future. I guarantee in the future, you will not find it very interesting.

When visitors come to your home, make sure you turn off your television and keep it off. News television broadcasters are fighting for your guests' attention as they promote despair, war, death, and destruction with many headline news interruptions. Those little banners that run across the bottom of the screen achieve your attention and they take hold of your consciousness. Television will diminish your positive spirit.

3) Say good things about others
My Mother always says, "if you can't say anything nice about others, don't say anything at all." However, when you find yourself in a conversation and a relative says, "Remember Uncle Phil?" " He was an alcoholic" Respond with " yes, Uncle Phil was an alcoholic and he was the most charitable person, I have ever met."

Connect your friend's negative statement about Phil with a positive one. Set yourself up to find the positive in anyone's statement and you will keep negative thoughts and depression from overtaking your life.

Og Mandino, a great motivator once said, "treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight." "Your life will never be the same again."

4) Get physical exercise
Adults forget about exercise when suffering from depression. Make sure you are exercising daily and sending more oxygen to your brain cells. The result of exercise will improve your health as well as your attitude.

5) Breathe deep and relax.
Practice the following breathing exercise to relax your body and mind.

Breathe deeply and relax. For 2 or 3 minutes each hour, take a short mental vacation.

You can engage in this exercise while you are standing in the checkout line at the supermarket or when listening to others while talking on a telephone. You can complete the exercise at home or at work.

Take three deep breathes and relax. As you inhale, concentrate on calm and peaceful thoughts. You may think about relaxing by a mountain, by the ocean or comfortably in your favorite room at home.

As you exhale, concentrate on pushing any tension out of your lungs.

Focus on positive images in your life. Focus on laughter, love, excitement, and hope.

Keep breathing in and out in this pattern until you feel better. If you practice the exercise often, you will notice wonderful changes in your outlook and in other aspects of your life.

Depression could be more fatal than just plain loneliness. It could render life-long consequences that could ruin your self-esteem, health, and well-being. Here are some superb tips to conquer the melancholy mood and get the most bliss out of your daily activities.
Being lonely is a normal part of our everyday lives. We get sad when we fail in our exams, when we're rejected by the person we love, or when someone very close to us passes away.

Depression, however, could be more fatal than just plain loneliness. It could render life-long consequences that could ruin your self-esteem, health, and well-being.

Here are some superb tips to conquer the melancholy mood and get the most bliss out of your daily activities.

6) Get Enough Light and Sunshine.

Lack of exposure to sunlight is responsible for the secretion of the hormone melatonin, which could trigger a dispirited mood and a lethargic condition.

Melatonin is only produced in the dark. It lowers the body temperature and makes you feel sluggish. If you are always couped up in your room (with the curtains closed), it would be difficult to restrain yourself from staying in bed.

This is the reason why many people are suffering from depression much more often in winter than in the other seasons. It's because the nights are longer.

If you can't afford to get some sunshine, you can always lighten up your room with brighter lights. Have lunch outside the office. Take frequent walks instead of driving your car over short distances.

7) Get Busy. Get Inspired.

You'll be more likely to overcome any feeling of depression if you are too busy to notice it. Live a life full of inspired activities.

Do the things you love. If you're a little short on cash, you could engage in simple stuffs like taking a leisurely stroll in the park, playing sports, reading books, or engaging in any activity that you have passion for and would love to pursue.

Set a goal - a meaningful purpose in life. No matter how difficult or discouraging life can be, remain firm and have an unshakable belief that you are capable of doing anything you desire. With this kind of positive attitude, you will attain a cheerful disposition to beat the blues.

8) Take a Break.

I mean it.

Listen to soothing music. Soak in a nice warm bath. Ask one of your close friends to massage you. Take a break from your stressful workload and spend the day just goofing around. In other words, have fun.

9) Eat Right and Stay Fit.

Avoid foods with lots of sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. Sugar and caffeine may give you a brief moment of energy; but they would later bring about anxiety , tension, and internal problems. Alcohol is a depressant. Many people would drink alcohol to "forget their problems." They're just aggravating their conditions in the process.

Exercising regularly is a vital depression buster because it allows your body to produce more endorphins than usual. Endorphins are sometimes called "the happy chemicals" because of their stress-reducing and happiness-inducing properties.

10) Get a Social Life.

No man is an island. Your circle of friends are there to give you moral support. Spending time and engaging in worthwhile activities with them could give you a very satisfying feeling. Nothing feels better than having group support.

Never underestimate the power of touch. Doesn't it feel so good when someone pats you on the back and gives you words of encouragements during your most challenging times? Hug or embrace someone today. You'll never know when you have saved another life.

Get intimate. Establish close ties with your family and friends. The love and care expressed by others could tremendously boost your immune system and fend off illnesses. Best of all, you'll live a more secured and happy life.

U could try this. Its called Emotional Freedom Technique. U don't need to take pills. I'm using it my self and it works very quickly but it does sound really bazaar. But works. Explains in the links below.

Comedy. Comedy shows, comic strips, stand-up comics. Anything that makes you laugh. Immerse yourself in it. Not a permanent cure. But it definitely helps.

Some shows, movies & people that make me laugh: 3 Stooges, Looney Tunes, Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, America's Funniest Home Videos, Animal Planet's Funniest Animals, Comedy Central Premium Blend, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Mad Magazine, Peanuts, Office Space DVD, Austin Powers, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, Dane Cook, Pablo Francisco...lots more.

No one is immune. You're not alone. I hope you find your own anti-depressant. I wish you well.

psychgrad
Simple....psychotherapy. Most psychologists cannot prescribe medications (only in some states). They can recommend that you meet with a psychiatrist, but they can't force you to take pills. They may suggest that you take up a hobby, but you are human and free and you can always tell them that you would like to try something else. Most psychologists won't force religion upon you (they're supposed to be culturally sensitive), unless you see a pastoral counselor.
You will be surprised as to how much depression is sustained by our behaviors and the way we think (cognition), the way we interpret things. There are also unresolved issues in our pasts. The causes of depression are countless and the different types of psychotherapy are numerous. (I guess I have a cognitive-behavioral bias) They have done studies and noticed a "wait list" phenomena. Patients sometimes feel better before meeting with a therapist. They feel good about taking the initiative to seek help.
I'm not trying to instill false hope. I don't know if therapy with "cure" your depression, but given the number of depressed people that have been helped by therapy, its too helpful to ignore.

Find out why you've got emptiness inside yourself. Only by deep introspection can you come to the realization that the answer isn't inside you. You've discounted the only things that are going to help you.

go out and take a walk in the sun or warm weather. get around someone u like to be around or that is not a negative person. be positive and dont think about bad things or bad people you hate. Hope this helps

Find someone to talk to. Depression is often a result of turning your emotions inward on yourself. It would help a lot if you could find a way to vent. I know it can be expensive, but counseling might be a good option for you.

Exercise. Walking, running, jogging, rollerblading. Something like that. When you get going you can lose yourself in thought and work things out in your head. Relieves stress/anxiety. You'll feel better after a half hour.
