Could a barman get herpetic whitlow from picking up glasses?
Hi, Just wondering if it is possible for somone to get get herpetic whitlow from touching used glasses. Some people say that you can get herpes from drinking from the same cup as someone with an outbreak, but others say the virus dies almost as soon as it leaves the body. cheers

Experts say that the virus does not last long outside of the body. But I had a friend of mine got herpes from a handrail in a hospital. He had his palm treated after that. So there's really no sure time frame as to the death of the virus on inanimate objects.

HSV-1 does not survive long at all outside the human body. The virus is generally transmitted through direct contact with saliva, not through contact with inanimate objects touched by an infected person. I have never heard of transmission of HSV-1 through an untouched piece of food. Telephones and utensils also would pose minimal risk. Although it is true that one can spread the infection even if there are no symptoms, the risk is much lower when there are no actual blisters -- and in any case, transmission usually involves DIRECT contact.

No you're not likely to get herpetic whitlow that way. Herpes actually doesn't last for long periods of time on objects. It evaporates quickly on objects. You would be more likely to get herpetic whitlow if you were constantly sticking your fingers into some one elses mouth that has cold sores, which are cause by oral herpes and one of the more common causes of herpetic whitlow. Dentists would get herpetic whitlow before latex gloves were used.
