Get Rid of Ear Wax

Get rid of ear wax at home. This is just as effective and costs nothing, unless you don't have hydrogen peroxide at home...then it costs under $2.00.

Steps
  1. Fill an eyedropper with hydrogen peroxide of a strength no greater than 3%. Anything stronger may damage your eardrum.
  2. Fill your ear canal with the peroxide.
  3. Lie on your side with the ear facing up, to keep the peroxide in.
  4. Let the peroxide sit until it stops fizzing.
  5. Get in the shower, and hold your ear up to the water from the shower head. Let body-temperature water run into the ear until the wax plug is washed out.
  6. Repeat, if necessary.

Tips
  • If you have a lot of buildup, it may be because you use your finger or cotton swabs to clean your ears...That only pushes the wax in deeper. Try the above treatment instead.

Warnings
  • DO NOT use full-strength hydrogen peroxide. You'll damage your eardrum with anything of a concentration greater than 3%.
  • DO NOT try this if there is any opening in the eardrum. (ie. ruptured eardrum, or tubes)
  • Avoid using hot water when trying the shower method, this is dangerous for the eardrum.
  • Do not allow water, especially tap water, to remain in the ear, as this can lead to serious ear infections. Tap water contains pathogens such as pseudomonas which may not be harmful in drinking water, but can cause big problems in the ear.
    • If you could not remove all the wax, it will trap some of the water in the ear. You can reduce the risk of ear infection by using a safe sterilizing and evaporating agent such as a few drops of spirit (methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol) or a commercial preparation such as Aquaear (a treatment for swimmer's ear).
