Is there any type of tea I could drink that would help my breathing?
I have smoked a pack a day for 40 years and quit yesterday. I was having a real problem breathing but it's alittle better today but thought maybe I could drink some kind of tea that would help open up my lungs and breathe even better. I use the neb and inhalers but I want to stop using them on a daily basis.

stop smoking...

drink echinacea , its an immunostimulator , meaning it help your immune system (like when you get sick) ward off infections.

mint tea is pretty good. if you are having breathing problems, another good thing to do is boil water then breathe in the steam. always opens up my airways. try it!

you may have heard of a tea called 'breath easy'...it contains psuedoephedrine...so it really works, and it must be controlled...you can get hyper...if you have cardiac problems, forget it...if not, it will open you up quickly...

Green Tea is good for you and has lots of antidioxidants; also, drink lemon juice. It's good for your smoker's cough and lots of cool water. I am asthmatic and drink a ton of water. Very allergic to those cancer sticks people smoke on public. Chew on cough drops too. It helps.

You really need to listen to Matt. After so many years of smoking you have done permanent damage to your airways and unfortunately they will never recover to the point that you will be without the medication to open them up. The inhalers and nebulizers reverse the effects of the damage only from treatment to treatment. However, as Matt stated the tea will help to keep you hydrated and thin the secretions in the lung and make them easier to expectorate. Also if you chose a tea that has caffeine in it you'll have the added side effect of mild bronchodilitation. That's a fancy way of saying that it has a small impact on the opening of the airways. Before the medications for asthma were developed we gave high doses of caffeine to patients who were having asthma attacks to open their airways. Just be sure that you check with your doctor to make sure that it is safe for you and your heart first. Drink plenty of plain water, don't forget to eat healthy and exercise every day. Finally, while you your self are quiting smoking you must also remember that you can not allow anyone else to smoke around you as second hand smoke is just as bad for you. I your family and friends want to light up they will need to go outside from now on. You need to be selfish in order to stay healthy. I wish you luck.

I am sorry to say, you may never get off the nebs. As far as the tea question, any tea can help with opening airways if you have constriction of the airways. To help with the congestion that occurs after you quit smoking, you need to be properly hydrated, get some light exercise, hot showers and maybe some over the counter decongestants like Musinex.

Good luck
