Join the Gym, or run/jog/walk?
should i join the gym

if i jog or walk around the neighbor hood, how often should i do it and how long? i grow tired fast when i do activities.. should i work my way up to a certain time?

if i go to the gym.. how many times a week should i go and for how long? i want to do mostly cardio, and use the tanning beds they have.

if you join the gym don't go to bally total fitness, they riped me off ones, mutha sukas i still hate them for that, if you got to the 24 hour fitness they have plans where you can pay like 600 bucks for a 3 year membership, is not all year road so youll have to ask. it is 3 days a week, cuz you have to give your body muscles 24 hours to recover if you are trying to do resistance work out you can go like 4 days a week. drink lots of whater and do not over work out, youll rip a muscle.
good look and get hot..........

Try to go to the gym if you can afford it because if you want to loose weight you are going to need to weight train. Start out gradually. Walk on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Keep it at a pace that challenges you but not completely exhaust you in 5 minutes. Work up a sweat. You aren't going to see results if you don't push yourself beyond what you think your limits are. I use to work out with a trainer 3 times a week before I moved to a small city and it was the best money I ever spent. He taught me that the best way to loos weight is to combine cardio and weight training. Muscle increases your metabolism and burns fat. If you can work your way up to weight training 3 days a week and doing cardio 5 days a week you'll get into great shape in no time. See if your gym offers a free personal training session to new members. Most bigger gyms so so take advantage of the new exercises they can teach you and add those to what you already know. Also if your gym has spinning classes go to one. i never thought I could do it but now I'm hooked. It gives an intense workout that you adapt to your fitness level.

It depends. A gym can benefit you, but its inefficient for gas and what not. I say you should try jogging and walking for a few weeks, and see how that works for you. If you arent seeing results, try the gym for a month or so. Gyms are a motivational spot to be in, while jogging around a neighborhood isnt exactly thrilling.

Dont work your way up. Start off big. I swear. Thats how your body gets trained to be strong, by being forced to completed difficult tasks. Thats what they do in military boot camps.

If you want to be healthy and lose a little bit of weight, you should probably exercise at least 30 minutes 5 times a week. :)

And tanning beds are bad. Though, I am not here to judge you on that one. :)

forget the gym, just run

If you can afford a gym membership, I say go for the gym. That way you can still work out when the weather isn't good for outdoor cardio. The key to burning fat is doing a long workout at a steady pace. A 45-60 minute power walk is a lot better than a 20 minute run/jog. But it depends on what your work out goals are. How often you want to go is up to you. They say you should go at least 3 times a week, but if you want to go everyday, go for it! Just make sure that if you decide to run or jog for cardio, you are running heel, ball, toe and not just keeping all the weight on the ball of your foot... this will help prevent shin splints.

The gym is great too because you can use the weights. And if you need some guidance on working out, they have personal trainers!

And the tanning bed is a big plus too ;)

Join a gym, and do some walking around your neighborhood too.

I've been going to a gym for about 1 year ( the YMCA ), and just to warn you. It get's very " BORING " after awhile.

The main reason that I haven't quit, is because seeing other people of all ages working out. Motivates me to continue, without giving up.

I don't really know anybody at my gym, but seeing the same faces every now and then. Makes it feel like a support team ~lol

BABYDOLL!!!
walking is the best excercize there is and works every muscle in your body better then going to the gym any day

I joined the gum for a whole year, but never even visited it for more than 2-3 months. But still i gotta pay for that because i've signed a contract for a year. So, if u think that u r pretty lazy, then don't join the gym as long as you are alone, if you have a partner with you to go to gym at the same time you'll go. then it's better that you'll join the gym - only if u'll go regularly

around the block is a lot cheaper, you could go to the gym if your looking to get toned all over, jogging is more cardio, but good for you and will make you toned.

Pixie
I think running alone will do the trick, about an hour a day 5x a week or something. but if you do decide to join the gym dont do just cardio, make sure you do weights. the weights will help you more.

It sounds as if you need some direction. I would suggest that you join the gym and find yourself a trainer to set up a routine for you. A well rounded routine that includes light weights and different cardio training will help you get into shape a lot quicker than only running would.
Also, if you live in a warm summer/cold winter climate the gym is nice because you wont have to run outside in the snow.

I joined the gym and only went for like a year... its a 2 year contract so Im still paying >:-0

just go run around outside.. at least its free

Sai2301
like i answered in your previous question a little while ago, brisk walk one hour daily...add some pilates or yoga stretches after your walks...how can things get easier and more cost effective than this??

ramirez
if you want to go to the gym is three times a week and you can find a trainer that can help. Most gyms have trainers for free.

In these hard economic times, many people are dropping or cancelling their gym membership.
As you seem to be out of shape, anyway, the best way is to walk, you can loose a lot of weight that way.
Just walk enough, until you feel tired, and add a little more. Do the same distance for a week, then as you become fitter, you can add more distance to your walk.
I bicycle every day, so I can go further, and it's hot as hard on the legs.
And does help burning off those calories. Maybe change from walking one day to biking the next.
It's also fun, just to see your own neighborhood on foot. We don't really see that much of it, driving our cars. And by biking and walking we also get to meet our neighbors. Plus those joggers and dog walkers. It's much more pleasant than a gym, and a lot less expensive.

I think you should just start with walking 20-30 mins a day or build up to that. Joining a gym can often be a big financial commitment, so if you are unsure about going on a regular basis (at least 3 times a week) don't do that in the beginning. Check around at your local gyms, see if they offer like a free trial membership, take advantage of those at all the places you can before making the decision to join one.

I excercise at least 5x a week and do a combination of both, gym & walks around my neighborhood. I don't have the weights and excercise machines at home, so I hit the gym about 2x a week for at least 1-2 hours. And alternate what you work when at the gym, upper body/lower body. The other 3 days I will walk for 45 minutes (about 2 miles) with my friends. You should really work yourself gradually, don't start on day 1 running 2 miles! Start out slow and work your way up. Any trainer would tell you that. Plus, be sure to check with your family doctor if you have any health conditions that you need to monitor while doing any type of excercise.

Go to the gym if:
1. you can afford it.
2. it has equipment you wish to use.
3. the weather in your area will limit your ability to excercise outdoors frequently (too cold, too hot, rainy, snowy)
4. the gym is nearby (gas, disincentive if too far away)
5. you like others exercising around you as motivation to work out.
6. there are special classes included in the fees that you enjoy (aerobics, water aerobics, shadow boxing, bicycle spinning, other).

Moreover, you will tone your muscles more easily with a variety of resistance exercise equipment. I don't have to be concerned about a nice tan, mine's natural. However, overexposure to UV can produce skin that ages prematurely (as well as other skin diseases); be careful (see www.IM2FIT@synthasite.com).

Frank
alright, well the gym go 3-4 times a week. run/jog 4-5. Id say gym makes you stronger while running makes you lose weight/have better breathing. I myself go to the gym.

If you're just getting started in a fitness regime, definitely start with the whole walking/running thing. Gym memberships are typically very expensive, require a contractual commitment of several years and are harder to get out of than a maximum security prison. The facilities they provide can't be matched by what you're doing on your own, but you want to make absolutely certain that you're serious about fitness before you obligate yourself to a membership that is going to end up costing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Don't think that already being a member is going to compel you to visit a gym either...trust me, if the desire for a better body and healthier living conditions didn't do it, the fact that you're wasting $60 a month won't either.
