When getting your wisdom teeth removed, do you have to go under Anesthesia or can they give you somthing else?
I'm a smoker and I'm afraid of what might happen.
I don't want to tell them im smoker because then my parents might find out

You will have to have anesthesia because a needle into your gum won't provide enough pain relief. Stop smoking and tell your parents that you will quit now that they know... (well when you tell them!)

The anesthesia shouldn't do any harm, even though you smoke. Though I still recommend you quit smoking while you're young; it's going to cost you a ton when you're older, in addition to all the health problems.

Dr Harry W
Can use nitrous & or local injection, have done hundreds that way. Doc W

I had nothing but a few shots of lydocaine which is a local anesthesia. I was not knocked out. I'm a smoker too but I told my dentist. That had nothing to do with the fact that I wasn't knocked out.

Goddess
If they are straight pulls with no issues, they should be able to do it under Novocaine just as they would with other teeth. But if they're impacted or aren't in all the way or if there are other problems, or if they're taking them all out at once, they will have to use anesthesia. Please don't screw around with this -- make sure you tell the doctor everything! It's imperative. The dentist needs to be informed of all possible health issues before using anesthesia, including smoking. Tell him or her in private about the smoking, ask that they keep the confidence and they will (doctor/patient privilege should extend to dentists).

Nothing's going to happen because you smoke...

But, you usually have the choice of being knocked out or just getting Novacaine. I had all of my wisdom teeth out using Novacaine and it didn't hurt a bit. I was very scared too. I hate dentists, but it turned out to be nothing. General anesthesia is scarier to me... and you can't drive yourself home if you get it either...

Patient confidentiality precludes them from telling your parent that you smoke, so rest assured that you can say what you need to say. We in the health care field are not here to rat people out to their parents, spouses, signifigant others, or etc. So please be honest with your doctor. He will not tell your parents. If you are afraid still, tell him they don't know so he doesn't accidently say something. Good luck

The doc can't tell your parents you're a smoker...plus it's not going to make a difference anyway, don't know why you'd think so. But the doc can put you in twilight sleep...which is great for having them removed...or just numb you up, t hought it's not the best. But - your best bet is just get put out, then you don't have to worry about it.

If you're a smoker and overweight and have sleep problems, then you should be worried about being put out completely.
Forget about the people who decide to answer the question with telling you that you need to tell your parents...

And I agree with Steven -- the real pain is the recovery - surgery is usually a breeze

Steven B
I had 2 of mine out a month ago with a local anesthetic. I felt a lot of pressure but no pain at all during the surgery. An hour later I was in complete agony. In my case at least general anesthesia would have been a complete waste of time. The real pain is in the recovery.

m_soulliere
no i had mine removed with just the numbing shot don't smoke about 2 hours after this will help reduce the bleeding
and being a mom of 4 grown i always new when my kids snuck and smoked don't be surprised if your parents already know

blue
You will be just fine. Yes you can have other numbers besides being put to sleep, but you DONT want to go there. The wisdom teeth are bigger and harder to remove thats why they put you under. Being put to sleep will happen so fast you wont have time to panick about it and the smoking thing; your too young to suffer negative effects from that at this stage of your life. Unless your Dr can find a medical reason NOT too put you out, go ahead and GIT R DONE! good Luck!
