I had a really bad experience at the dentists when I was 13 - I had to have two teeth out either side of my incisors to put a big brace on. During the operation which was done under general anaesthetic, I had a really bad dream about descending to hell and when they brought me round I puke everywhere. I didn't go to the dentists again for 18 years until I had a really bad abscess that was making me scream. I managed to get into the dentists that my wife and kids were with and, what can I say - THEY WERE FANTASTIC - they completely sympathised with my phobia and were absolutely wonderful. I've been back several times since and I no one is more surprised than me that every time I go, they are very, very understanding and I think you may find things have changed a lot since you last went.

me i am the worlds worst. i have writtren a blog about it, i have to go to hospital and have the equivalent of the date rate drug so that i dont remember anything that happens there. I have terrible claustraphobia and i can''t even have the dentist bending over my face. I am lucky i have good white teeth but i have only been a handful of times in my whole life. My husbands mouth is full of fillings and mine is in better nick than his. I pay hundreds of pounds for this priveledge but i would pay thousands. To even put the goggles over my eyes has me in a fighting frenzy. Its horrible i sooo sympathise with you. I dread the day i have to go again( which wont be for years) and i will put it off till the very last.....No one understands really and i feel such a baby but i'd rather poop a hedgehog than go to the dentist, i'm sorry for you..good luck and i sincerely mean it...

i am too

i thought the dentist was bad until i saw the film, the dentist. Now after that, I've never entered a cabinet ever again. You should watch it, might give you an idea on how bad it can get. Good luck.

Once, I even considered having a laser procedure done for whiter teeth. But since I really hate going to a dentist, I tried to find an alternative through this site http://www.upkb.com/crestwhitestrips.php I now use Crest White Strips sample, and I'm happy about it.

I don't understand how people can be scared of the Dentist - What's the worst that can happen - I adore my Dentist and worship him for doing such great work on my teeth and taking care of them. Don't neglect your smile. Don't be nervous, it's not an exam - They are there to look after you and take care of you.

My mum always told us that maggots would come into our mouths if we didn't brush our teeth !!!! And we did every night !!

The reason why you were afraid to go to the dentist in the first place is because of the traumatic pain you had in the past when visiting the dentist years ago. That's why you didn't go back. I'm so sorry that you couldn't save your teeth before now.

I have been going to the dentist for about 1 month now, replacing all the silver fillings in my mouth to white fillings. I made sure my dentist knew ahead of time that in NO way could I tolerate any pain, and he has been good enough to numb me for even the slightest thing, which I don't mind at all.

I hadn't been to the dentist in 10 years and needed 3 crowns to replace teeth that are too far gone to be filled.

The thing that kept me away from the dentist for so many years was the traumatic pain going to the dentist gave me when I was a kid. I would have rather had a doctor exam with 10 shots than go to the dentist. And now, I really wish I had gone every year just for a check up.

Oh well, we live and learn.

I was petrified but forced myself to do something about it. After a lot of research (and one scary false start!) I found a brilliant dentist who specialises in phobics. He understands the problems and gives me sedatives (not anaesthetic)if necessary.
Not cheap, but worth it and I'm glad I took the plunge. After years of neglect, he tells me my teeth should now see me out!
Good luck.

I take good care of my teeth but am still kind of scared of the dentist. I dont like someone being all up in mah girll poking around in my mouth with sharp objects!! I still go to the dentist..and Im so afraid to go through getting cavities filled (ive never had any before) that I always brush and floss and take good care of my teeth. Plus, Im gonna have to soon since Im getting braces

Yes, there are alot of people that are scared of the dentist. It is a frightening experience if you've had a bad visit before. You have waited too long to see the dentist so now all the problems are arising in your mouth. Your upcoming visit might be a better one since they will put u to sleep, there are alot of offices that use consious sedation(laughing gas) and sedative to help relax u and get thru the procedure. If u think u might get swollen abscess, ask them to give u a prescription for an antibiotic, this will help prevent the infection to break out. Then can even call it in to your pharmacy if u ask. Good Luck.

I'm terrified too and on Wednesday I've got to go to have 2 root canals (been told it hurts) might chicken out and just have em pulled. Apart from anything else it's gonna cost me, ready for this?................£990

Who in their right mind would fork out nearly a grand to be put through agony?????

NOT ME!!!!!!

marmat16az
There's no reason to be scared, with modern anesthetics you won't feel a thing -- and your new teeth will look great.

Nope....always had a good one!

I am also very scared of the dentist. When I was in 8th grade, I got braces. Mentally scarred me for life. I hated going to the ortho so much that I didn't go for 2 years. My mom never took me because she was so busy. Eventually when I got my license, I was responsible for taking myself to the ortho. Anyway, finally got my braces off SENIOR year of high school. But anyway, I couldn't stand the pain EVERY MONTH when they tighten the braces. Anyway, as an adult, I have been to the dentist every 5 years. Never flossing, and brushing once a day. My gums always bled when brushing my teeth. Finally, I went to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned. I ended up having to go once a week for 8 weeks because I had so many cavitites. The pain and noise in your head when they drill or scrape the junk off your teeth is UNBEARABLE. I went to the dentist last week for the first time in 5 years and it was AWFUL. I cried when they cleaned my teeth because it hurt so much and I have two cavitites and have to go back next week for fillings. But, I have vowed to myself to take better care of my teeth, because, unlike you, I don't want to end up with dentures or gingivities which I was relieved I did not have. Since my last visit, last week, I have flossed and brushed every night and even have used LISTERINE to kill extra germs. I really feel for you. The terror the dentist instills is really frightening for those who have the phobia. It makes you not go to the dentist and for some, the consequences are dire. I hope that your procedure goes as well as it could and I will be thinking of you!

In the end no matter what you have to face em, yes i was as scared as you with dentist's, my childhood memories are not good of dentists in my day they were butchers. i stopped going in my teens, my mother kept telling me get to the dentist coz when your 21 you will have to pay a fortune. so i went had a load of work done and stopped going again. 23 years i had'nt had any preventative treatment, just went along and had the troublesome ones removed that was after weeks of pain gargling with whiskey and chewing ice cubes to numb the pain until it got that bad i had to go. Then they brought in that if you were'nt registered you had to go private, mate told me of a dentist that was taking on nhs but only a few, thought i gotta get the balls and go, really did take some nerve, got registered and now you see him once a year not 6 monthly and i can just about stomach once a year, and this guy dont even give you the numbing jab before a filling!! So i can sympathise with you 200% ok, but as i said before you gotta take the step eh, i'd like to keep in touch on this subject i see you are approachable through answers, let me know how you get on ok?
