I mean without being on medication for years and how is this is done. I've already had therapy on and off over the years. Does life really ever become worth living (i understand the usual ups and downs are okay) when you always seem to encounter the same episodes of despair but with less and less energy to fight them. Thanks in advance for any serious answers Additional Details
Stories of those who have overcome it (if any) would be welcome
My sister got over it, but I'm in the worse stae of it at the moment.

May be a little spiritual journey can help. All medication are drugs .
Change of environment is a good start.
Then we got to cut lose the living up to the Jone's spirit.
A spiritual journey can mean working with the underprivileged .
I would like to work with children.
I think when we pour our energy away from us we can overcome the drugs.
It is a slow process and it can not achieved overnight.

Yes of course.
To overcome, will yourself and find out what is wrong. Be willing to correct your mistakes. Appreciate yourself for all the positives within yourself. Build a self esteem.
Also, depression comes when you have not sufficiently adjusted to the situation. Be willing to reconstruct yourself for the situation.
In the end it all depands upon your will, not on any body else's.

i dont think anyone can fully overcome depression, but yes life does become worth living, if you want to be happier be around people that make u happy and make you laugh, those kinf of people always help me. it doesnt seem worth fighting the same thing over and over again, its hard but there will be a day when you will be able to start overcoming depression, you can take anti depressents but my dad had them and wen ever he didnt take them none of the family wanted to talk to him because not only did it make him upset it made him angry. i really hope that this helps you even if its only small cos everything begins with a first step

Clinical depression isn't lifelong for everybody. Some people have brief episodes and it goes away for good.
My psychatrist said if you've had it for several years it tends to last for life.
I have been diagnosed with two different depressive disorders "Major Depression, Recurrent" and "Dysthymic Disorder." Some psychiatrists call that "double depression."
Dysthymic Disorder is milder than Major Depression, but it never seems to go away completely.
My worst episode was in the early 1980s when I was in my 20s. I got treatment through a medication called Norpramin, and it worked like a miracle. I just took the drug for about a year and the depression didn't come back for several years. I got off the medication and wouldn't need treatment again until about 1993. I had a really unpleasant job situation at that time, and sometimes I wonder if my depression would have been gone for good if it wasn't for that job. The depressive episodes I had since then were never as bad as the first episode in the 80s, but I have been able to manage quite well on medication. Paxil worked the best for me. I have had a few times where I try to get off the medication. It usually lasts a few months and I start feeling bad again.

Nah i think depression tends to stick with people who experience it.It comes and goes in phases.I was depressed when i was younger, tried the whole suicide thing with sleeping pills and carbon monoxide poisoning from the car but that didn't go over so well lol.Anyways that was about 14 years ago when i was 19.I still get depression, especially when alot of bad events seem to come one after the other.I think the difference now is that I am older and can handle it better.I mean when i was younger i was so worried about so many things where as now when i get depressed after awhile i just say to myself "oh well, thats life" and I just kind of move on and accept things as they are.I think it has alot to do with your thinking you need to change the way you think. For example, your car breaks down, instead of thinking why me,why do bad things keep happening, you can think like well hell I have dealt with alot worse this is nothing in comparison.
I think when i was younger i wanted perfection in everything in my life, the perfect woman, the perfect job,the perfect house, etc. and when it didn't happen that way I felt like i was failing. Now i don't expect perfection,I just figure well this is the hand god has dealt me,so i just gotta play my cards the best i can.
One other thing is i don't give myself alot of time to sit around thinking anymore,i try to occupy my free time with hobbies. It could even be something as simple as playing video games for a couple hours. Then when thats done maybe go out for a drive.Stop somewhere for dinner.Too much free time can be your worst enemy so you gotta occupy that time with activities.Once you stop and start thinking about everything your mind will be your own worse enemy. When your depressed you feel liek you don't have the energy to do anything but that not doing anything makes it ten times worse. So start doing things even if you "don't feel like it" after awhile of doing things your stamina will build up,and you won't have much time to be thinking depressing thoughts when all your time is occupied.Go for a daily walk in the morning, even if its just around the neighborhood block.Maybe get a dog to go on walks with you, give you incentive to get out there each morning, for him if not for yourself.Go buy some things to keep you occupied, crossword puzzles, novels,DVDs,CDs,Home gym, whatever it is you think you might like that will keep you busy.Go to sporting events with friends, concerts, just start doing things.I know the feeling when you are down you don't want to do anything, but once you go do these things it turns out to be fun and you start thinking damn i should do stuff like this more often.

Try to understand yourself ,distraction is ok, even denial
.The prodlem is we complicate our lives ,our minds r always spinning plates.distraction will not work , we have to accept and resolve our prodlems.

Have been on just about every antidepressant drug that is going over years some with terrible effects that made me worse. Still take them but dont think they are doing a great deal of good.Came to conclusion that as a person thinks so will he or she become, if you think about depression then you will stay in a downward spiral. 7 year of counselling did not change thing. so decided to try to change my thinking and the way i internaly view things. This is hard at first and its a constant on going task , but it is realy worth the effort because now i am havinrg day and sometime weeks when i am truely inspired, and it great.Read today wright up on c.b.t therapy and it look like i have been doing something simmilar on my own thoughts, a been at it t for 3 years now, it hard work at times when your down and you feel like giving up at times. some times i do but i know that i am going to get back and 'KICK ***! if you'll excuse the expression. It take a long time but it is worth the effort.if you hate the depression it will consume you, except it as part of you for now and work with it's up and downs. learn everthing you can on this subject and positive thinking, you are the expert on your own way of being as we are all different ,what work for one may not for another, try and fined think that work for you, you are a divine piece of god, and of creation, ( that not a religiouse statement but a fact) youl get there but it takes time. It works for me, give it a go stick with it ,you've nothing to loose .You'll get there good luck.+

Of course you can over come depression! I was on 6 different meds for 12 years did ECT therapy which messed me even worse, got over that too. I recently got off all my meds of 12 years and it took some serious withdrawal like a junkie intense pain and itching then leaving a bruise every where I touched, puking allternating with being ravenously hungry. Not sleeping and when I did I had terrifying nightmares and shaking all over inside and out. It was the hardest thing have ever done and I'm not sure if I would have known HOW hard I would have done it. NOw I am working on all the symptons and emotions those meds suppressed all those years ago and that is quite interesting as well. I am determined to become a whole well functioning person that well exceeds even my own expectations in this beauitful life we have been blessed with and I want to live it to the fullest and you can too.

I'm battling depression, and have been for several years. I've never been medicated for it, the battle is all me. While I can't tell you that I'm cured, I can tell you it hasn't been as severe since I found something I love and realized I don't have to hide it from my friends, they will support me. My depression has been steadily going away. It doesn't control my life anymore.
Alyssa Lynn
a friend of mine was depressed for years... she was put on meds, but then got off of it herself, and she's just fine. no suicidal thoughts or anything.
Back in high school for just about 2yrs i was in a depressed state... I cried just about everyday, sometimes i slept too much, sometimes not enough, I went on eating binges, sometimes I didn't eat anything at all, I had suicidal thoughts, and my grades slipped. My teachers knew something was wrong and recommened me to talk with a social worker at school... and I did because I didn't want to continue feeling the way I did. (btw, i was a very shy person and I didn't want any1 to know my business... but i knew I had to get the courage to make this all stop)
so i talked with one and she made me feel really comfortable, she didn't pressure me into talking about anything I did not want to talk about... with talking to her and writing poems on how i felt, I was fine. It seems that's all I needed, someone to vent to, and someone to help me see that I wasn't worthless. I was cured without medication.... talking to someone sometimes helps, not always though, it all depends on the person really.

A complete change of scenery and life style is the only cure I think in my opinion.

you never really "overcome" depression, you just try and deal with it the best you can. Each individual suffering from depressing has a different lifestyle and responsibilities. I don't have the "energy" to fight certain things like I use to and it makes me mad. There are times when just making a phone call is too much for me. Yes, life is worth living, even though at times it doesn't seem like it. Find something you enjoy doing...help others...confide in a close friend or relative. talk it out.

The first time I got depressed, I was 20 years old and terrified. All the things I feared and mistrusted in myself as part of the depression I learned to cope with and not fear in time. I am still a raving insomniac at times and I still get down at times but the first episode taught me that fear was my biggest hurdle. I was on old fashioned antidepressants back then but I got info together about them and I decided when to come off them, let your Dr decide and you may aswell surender your life to him. The problem I had with the medicine was while it comforted me and kept me safe it also masked the fear, and how can you learn from an experience if that very experience is being chemically altered to make it an unoticable experience? That's my story and my belief anyway! I hope it helps.

Yes, in fact most people will eventually overcome depression on their own. Many people learn to ride the obstacles without sinking into despair. Enjoy the ups and know that the downs will teach more about life and yourself. If you are always in a slump you need to ask yourself what is going on and what, if anything you are getting from it. I knew a woman who was chronically depressed and it was fed by the enabling of her family and the way others kept her from having to deal with life.

Yes people do overcome it. Me - i'm 27. And my......well i've had enough bad stuff happen in my life to last 3 life times. I was on prozac at 13 - tried the suicide malarky couldn't see the point in going on.But i don,t know what happened - i just started to think yeah that was bad............WAS BAD. And i told myself i have no future if i keep on living in the past. Now i'm not saying it happened over night- cause it didn't. I just had to keep telling myself things will get better - They didn't and i hit rock bottom totally(never wanna go there again). So i got up one day - put all my medications in the bin - and i've never looked back that was nearly 2 years ago. You just have to find the right state of mind. When your head is messed up you can't deal with anything. But once you sort that out you can start dealing with your problems head on logically- No matter what gets thrown your way. Its hard but you do get there - if you give yourself a chance

Sadly depression is a chronic and recurrent disorder, and unfortunately the more timesyou relapse, the more likely it is that you will relapse again.
I expect frankly that you already know as many of the 'so called' answers that are available....i don't think anyone has the final conclusive answer, if they did they'd be a millionaire by now!!! All you can do is do your best to keep as mentally healthy as possible and ward off or lessen as many relapses as possible. The ways of doing this are (apparently): eating well (good foods, stay away from alcohol (it's a depressant) or caffeine (it increases anxiety)), regular exercise preferably in the fresh air, meditation, doing 'positive things' and staying away from people that 'bring you down', establishing a good sleep routine (same time going to bed every night and getting up every morning) and counselling to resolve any 'issues' you may have hidden in your mind. If you feel medication helps then continue with that, subject to the advice of your GP/psychiatrist. It is important that you stay on the meds until quite a long time after the depressive episode is over...don't come off too quickly or too early, otherwise you'll just relapse again. That's probably the most common mistake that everyone makes.
I'm sorry i don't have the answer you are looking for, but as I said before, sadly I don't think that answer actually exists (yet!)
take care

It took me years to overcome depressive feelings and patterns. Too long of a story.
Yes, it is possible but not without a great deal of conviction about being well. Try to get as much balance in your life as possible. Be your own best friend. Encourage yourself when nobody else does it. It's like going to combat every day. Be a survivor. Very Best.

Meditation and daily exercise can really help a lot. I was severely depressed after my mom died and while I was not suicidal, I remember quite vividly flying somewhere for business and hoping the plane would crash to let me out of my misery. I went on a 6-month routine of meds and then went off them.
When I went off them, my depression got worse before it got better. I stayed in therapy (I actually really enjoy therapy!) and I try to meditate 3-5x per week. Exercise really helps too (I'm not so great at that part) but when I do both together, it has a HUGE effect on my inner well-being and I find that I am more outgoing, content, and confident.
Affirmations and self-hypnosis also help. If you don't want to do meds, the best plan is daily meditation, exercise, and therapy combined. Meditation will change your life if you let it--but you have to be patient.
Good luck, and remember--depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain. That's all it is.
tricky
it's tough, I know, but even the most depressed people have ups , that's simply the nature of depression, and there are medications that make -downs- easier ... having goals and plans (rational ones, that can be achieved) helped me.
The thing that was making my downs difficult were friendships with people who could understand me ... doesn't sound logical, i know, but it is so .. the only people who were able to understand me were the ones who were experiencing the same thing, and they're not a good energy. You should try to surround yourself with positive people who won't give you time to enjoy being miserable (I'm saying that because I, just like most of people who have depressive periods, get so focused on being depressed, I build my life around it, I identified with it, and feel that loosing it would mean loosing a part of myself) ... We all exchange energy with other people, and you should try to make yourself make rational, not emotional decision about which kind of energy is that going to be.
Good luck!

I do not think that you ever recover from depression - I think many learn to live with it by using either meds or distraction techniques. I think depression is an ongoing battle.... and I hate it....

Well some people say yes but in my case it's not true. BUT I have learned how to survive, when I am down my family understand and support me and remind me that I always come out of it eventually. Remember what does not kill you makes you stronger. You may always have bad patches but the good ones do make up for it. Good Luck
it is possible to live with depression, there are councelling that your g.p. can get for you, i have suffered or lived with depression for many years and it is difficult but livable, do keep your doctor up to date with how you feel, there are also different types and reasons for it so you need to clarify it, dont despair millions of depressions suffers can help one thing i find is keep talking to drs. councellors and people who go throught the same, they can guide you, good luck and bes t wishes , june b.
