I need some help with nightmares?
I'm having some trouble with nightmares... I've had them almost all my life, or as far back as I can remember. The first one I remember was when I was four. I can never remember them when I wake up. I don't even know why they're so scary. My parents and my best friend have woken me up because I was screaming or crying hysterically. More than once I've just got out of bed and started sleep walking. Once when I was seven my mom couldn't catch up to me until we were about 20 feet from our really busy street, and when she picked me up, I tried to kick and bite her. I finally stopped, and just cried hysterically. I woke up the next day in her bed with her, no idea how I got there. I just knew that I was still scared like I had a bad dream when I was asleep. She didn't tell me the full truth until I was about 14, which is when she told me about the screaming. It's not really that frequent though. Maybe once or twice a month, just randomly. The way I've came to realize that I've had one of them (thankfully the sleepwalking and screaming are extremely rare) is that I wake up in what feels like a full blown panic attack, and my pillow is wet. I just want to know if anyone else has dreams like this, and if so, what do you do? I usually call my boyfriend to get calmed down after, but I want to stop them, period. He gave me his teddy bear from when he was little, which was cute, but not terribly helpful. I still use a night light, because the nightmares have made me completely terrified of the dark. (And please don't recommend professional help. I've been to several different therapists because of stuff that's happened in life, against. It's worse than the nightmares. I don't like talking about my past. I move forward. But at the age the nightmares had strted started, there had been no trauma in my life.) Anyway, help would be greatly appreciated :) Well, I never knew that anemia can cause nightmares, but I've already been tested a couple of times in the last year for dizziness and ocassional fainting when standing up. (Dr. told me I had low blood pressure and just stand slower) MZ: great idea, except they're not like a "being chased by a giant monster" nightmare. It's just... weird. Always the exact same thing, but it's not anything specific... More like just complete terror, and always for the same reason. I don't know what though:/

There's a treatment for nightmares. It's simple and it's probably the most effective self help for a psychological problem there is, but you have to know what the dream is in order to solve the problem. It's called imagery rehearsal therapy. It was developed to help people with recurrent nightmares from terrible things like near-fatal accidents and war. You take things from the nightmares and use them to write a dream with a happy ending. For instance, if you wake up when Dracula is getting out of his coffin, you can write a different ending to the dream in which you find a machine gun to shoot him with. Then you "rehearse" the dream in your imagination while you're relaxed, over and over. To do this, you should have a good relaxation method. Many people like slow, deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation (see PMR in Wikipedia).

MZ just curious
Well when I was younger I used to have this same nightmare every night and would wake up sweating and my heart beating fast but anyways just think its your dream switch it up a bit you control it if you imagine beautiful flowers that's what you will see it will help just remember your in control

Angelic
fusepark's got it. The same thing happens to my friend.

It might be something more unusual than garden-variety nightmares: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terror And go to your doctor and get checked for anemia. That's a big risk factor for nightmare.
