What's a logical reason for not receiving treatment for cancer?
I'm supposed to be writing a one-act for my theatre class for our finals and he said he'd give extra points if we made it about cancer and submitted it to this contest thingy. I've got the perfect idea but...can't figure out a reason for it to happen.

If someone who had cancer had the option of therapy/surgery/etc. and opted out of it...what would be a logical reason for doing so?

My character (for lack of a better word) dies at the end, but, to me, it doesn't make sense for her to not have any treatment or some way to be getting better.

Maybe I could say the treatment isn't working? I have no idea what to do.

Help?

With all that has been said the treatments can kill you that is my reason for not receiving treatment. In all my research chemo is poison that kill good and bad cells rad burns the persons insides and causes more problems. I have never meet anyone that has gone through those treatments that would do it again.

My husband passed away almost 2 years ago from lung and brain cancer. He did not do the chemo or radiation because neither would have saved his life. The doctors said the treatments would lessen the pain but when you are so sick the treatments just plain wear you out.

The patient is an adult. The chemo he had made him very sick and very tired. Because of this he does not want to go through that again. Let him do what he wants. My Mother had lung cancer. She went through Chemotherapy twice and the second time was way too much for her. When they discovered the cancer had come back for the third time, she said no more. She lived about a year more, maybe less. But she died under her terms and with the most dignity I have ever seen. I never wanted her to go, but it was her time. I personally have no regrets. This was 10 years ago last fall. I miss her more each day. She is no longer in pain, no longer suffering and no more trying harder and harder to breathe.

Let your patient do as he pleases. Support his decision and he will and his family will cherish the time you all have left together.

You do have a couple of interesting ideas to follow here, especially with regards to the girl fearing a second trial of cancer...

As for the j-sickness bunch refusing whole blood, they do allow a substitute such as okra juice and another which I cannot remember...

I think the scenario you want for your essay would be more realistic to express denial for treatment for but two reasons. One would be that a cancer has taken over the entire body and there is a terminal time established. The other would be as that nice girl expresses, the ordeal of a second period of cancer treatments is horrendous to deal with and the fear of even a third bout with cancer would follow...

I have dealt with each scenario and do have compassion for those making their own decisions while yet I am aware of many survivors too...

As a "take" for your essay, I would illustrate a lady having faced the ordeal of cancer whose doctors gave her confidence they had removed all the cancer... She became a survivor...!

Illustrate her life when being diagnosed and then after her successful operation . Reflect the happiness amongst her family her circle of friendship and of what she felt herself...

Then, perhaps six months later, the cancer returned and death seemed her destiny with knowing more treatments would only buy her a few months of life... The affects of treatments itself are a formiddable experience to deal with...

The lady refusing the treatment will accept being terminal and begin to plan her families future for after she is gone, possibly even to finding a wife for her soon to be widower husband so that he will have a new companion as well as someone to help raise their children she leaves behind...

I hope this scenario will bounce your essay to the top grade as it certainly is truthful and realistic to the times. It would be good if more people became aware of these situations and not be spellbound by doctors whose inept desire and oligation is to prolong life...

Perhaps a survivor here in Answers may be willing to help you further... It definitely is a worthwhile and notable project of value to everyone... If I may be of further help also, just email me...

Best of luck...

There are many reasons to not have treatment, some more logical than others.

1. Religious beliefs
2. Been through cancer treatment before and unable to face it again (It takes a LOT out of you, physically and emotionally)
3. Survival odds poor even with treatment ( Friend who has now passed away was given the same odds of them stopping (not curing) her cancer as I was given of recurrance.)
4. Pregnant woman who refuses treatment to save her unborn child.
5. Elderly who feel they have lived long enough and don't want to face the indignity of some treatments.
6. Fear, while going through my treatment I met numerous people who were amazed at how "brave" I was, and said they would never be able to put themselves through that. My standard comment was the alternative (certain death) was a pretty grim alternative and tended to make it easy to be "brave" LOL

Treatmets don't always work, people can have every possible treatment and still die. Others just get to a point where going on sems harder than giving up, and refuse further treatments.

It will be a very dark play, but is a situation that many face. Personally I prefer to look at the chances of survival, which with early diagnosis are good for most types of cancer.

All ttt have horrible side effects:hair loss, nausea, anorexia, depression + the effects of the cancer itself ... So your character decides she wants to die in dignity and suffering the effects of one thing and spare herself physical, emotional and mental suffering. Its the most logical thing.

the character knows that cancer has spread far and wide to her brain.her doc tells her that inspite of best treatmemt she may go in coma any time and stay vegetative,on life support systems, just a human body----no feelings,no awareness,no emotions!and to top it all she hasbeen a doctor/nurse in a cancer hospice.
how is that?

5 years ago when my dad had lung cancer they told him his heart was bad and might not survive the operation to remove part of his lung and if he got chemo it would give him a few extra months - he got the op and was fine - 3 years later he had stomach cancer and was told chemo etc wouldn't help it might prolong his life for a few months - he decided against chemo, he died 6 weeks later.

not sure if it is logical but i can tell you why I will not be having treatments if my cancer returns..having already experienced the hell that is the treatments and currently still going through the horrible side effects 3 years later (and know people that 20+ years later still have the side effects from the treatments) i have personally decided that if my cancer returns i will just live my life as is for how ever long i can and will not receive treatment

Ben
Jehovah's Witness Religion don't believe in the transfusion of bloods - and that may be involved in some cancer treatments (especially those involving surgery).

The character has a late family member who died whilst under cancer treatment and the character is now in an aversion of cancer treatment.

The character has another disease (like HIV) and doesn't want his family to find out as they will conduct a blood test before the surgery?
