Persistent Vegetative State is a term for the patients who are in a position like coma but a sleep awake cycle due to an insult to brain. This was a cruel term for a human being. It means that a permanent state like a vegetable. Now within last two years this term has lost its meaning by knowing that many of them are somewhat conscious and aware. In past there are many cases where the people fully or partially recovered but often doctors claimed them as misdiagnosed. Some sort of recovery is possible and we are also looking for recovery near to full recovery. In my view most of them loses their motor function capability in result of the 'brain shock' in cases of head trauma.

Persistent Vegetative State is not quite brain dead. The part of the brain that controls vital functions is still active enough to provide breathing and heartbeat. But the rest of the brain is devastated, and the person does not know what has happened, or anything else.
Nerve cells do not grow back--once the nerve cell is dead, it is gone for good. Maybe someday we'll be able to replace them with stem cell therapy, but then we will e dealing with someone who has the body but not the memories of the previous person. PVS is for all intents and purposes personality death.
