how does sleep apnea affect having surgery?

cwgrrl7
It won't affect you during surgery, anesthesia professionals will be there to monitor you and the breathing tube inserted (and possible oral airways) will keep your airway patent. The most important thing is that you make sure your doctor is aware that you have sleep apnea for your use during your recovery period post op-the sleep after surgery is so deep that your CPAP machine will be imperative to maintain your airway.

If you have sleep apnea and were to have surgery that did not normally require general anesthesia, the anesthesiologist probably would opt to give you the general (intubation) because then they are able to do the breathing for you. If you were just given moderate sedation, there is an increased risk of you not breathing on your own because of the apnea. They would also probably leave in the endotracheal tube longer to make sure that you are more awake and more aware to breathe on your own and follow commands. They would also like you to bring your cpap machine with you so they can put it on you in recovery.

the surgery itself? well during surgery the anesthesiologist will closely monitor your breathing but they do that with all patients and after you will have oxygen on like all others don't really see how it will change in your situation Do you have a Cpap machine? if so let your Dr know they may want you to bring it in if you are spending the nite
