I've been waking up, not breathing and have to gasp for air?
Probably once a week for about 6 months, I've been waking up out of nowhere, feeling suffocated (my head isn't in my pillow when this happens) and it's almost like I forget how to breath so when I try to take in a deep breath it's a painful struggle. I told my mom about this and wondered if I had sleep apnea, she said no because I'm not overweight and most people can go years without knowing they have it. She told me it was anxiety issues, but that seems doubtful. I do have a panic disorder, but when I wake up I usually wasn't dreaming. I don't wake up panicked other than the fact that I can't breath. My panic attacks usually just consist of heart palpitations and sweating and racing thoughts, not breathing problems. I honestly don't know what this could be, but it's concerning me. Also, all of the relatives snore, except me (according to everyone else that's been around me sleeping), if that's relevant. James if I die it's your fault haha

Anxiety is one of the most common mental problem associated with sleep disorders. It's not unusual that if you have anxiety disorder, then this will be the cause of your sleep disturbances, like insomnia. The most common anxiety disorders that can cause sleep disturbance are: * Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) - with symptoms of anxiety that are driven by worry, which last for at least 5-6 month. In this type of anxiety disorder, there are symptoms related to sleep apnea, such as fatigue, restlessness, irritability, poor concentration...but doesn't mean that you have a link between sleep apnea and anxiety. * Panic disorder - with somatic symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, tachycardia, the impression that they are going to die. Now, this type of anxiety is familiar to me. A person with panic attacks is more likely to involve sleep apnea in his problems. And I will tell you why. Panic attacks may occur not only during the daytime, but during sleep, as well. It's understandable why a patient with panic attack ask himself if there is a link between sleep apnea and anxiety. The symptoms are almost the same: - severely impaired sleep - frequent awakenings - decreased sleep efficiency - increased movement time - fear of going to bed - insomnia I hope it helps.

you should see a doctor for this. yu could have a heart problem. not being able to breath can eb veryyy scaryy

I don't know your age, but generally speaking, sleep apnea is associated with snoring along with sudden stops in breathing. Often times the sufferer doesn't wake up or even realize they weren't breathing. Nocturnal Dyspnea is generally associated with being overweight and other respiratory issues such as COPD and CHF. I would be most likely to agree with your mother about the anxiety issue, as often "panic attacks" can come on without any known provocation, and just because you don't remember that you were dreaming doesn't necessarily mean you weren't dreaming.

It's true that sleep apnea is more common in people who are overweight, but it can affect anyone. You should see a doctor if it persist. It could be that you hyperventilate too.

I'm pretty sure it's sleep apnea, but then again, I'm not a doctor. You should seriously consider going to a doctor though, not Y! Answers. Just sayin...

Faith Warrior
I know people with sleep apnea that are skinny. Anyway..I do believe that you are having panic attacks when this happens. Have you contacted your Dr.? If not, please do so. God bless you!
