I'm 14 and when its cold out and I'm going up stairs or walking I get really bad pains in my knee. They get so bad that I have to stop and take a break for a good 5 minutes. Does anyone know why this could be happening? I do not want to have to go to a doctor!!! |

With it bothering you when you are going up and down stairs you more than likely have condromalisa <sp> and since it is bothering you more with it being cold i am willing to bet that you have some arthritis setting in.
I know what you are thinking i am only 14 i am to young to have arthritis, sadly i have news for you there is no such thing as too young. I was diagnosed with it in BOTH of my knees at 16
I know that you dont want to go to the doc but unless you want to end up in my shoes (i ignored the pain for 4 years) where you have 10 operations on your knees (I have spent over $6,000 this year alone on my knees and that is with my insurance) |

I'm afraid without seeing a doctor you can't get a proper diagnosis - no-one can say exactly what you have without seeing you. You can find some exercises to strengthen the knee muscle and wear a tubigrip which will support the joint and should relieve the pain a little. |

I have the same exact problem. It started when I was 13 when I was cheerleading. I went to the doctor and he told me I have chondromalacia. Basically, the tendon that runs along side your knee is stretched and it causes the kneecap to rub the cartilage underneath it. Mine hurts when it rains or is cold, or when I put a lot of pressure on it. Unfortunately there is nothing they can do for it, unless the tendon tears. Ice seems to work best after a lot of exercise. Also, the doctor gave me a knee brace to wear if I knew I was going to be doing something active. Hope this helps! |
