How to help someone addicted to pain pills?
Ok, so lemme give you some background information. My Mother in law has had several surgeries in the last year and a half. in August of 2010 she found out she had breast cancer. She went through the chemo and had a bi lateral mastectomy. However before her Chemo started she lost her job and since then has used up her remaining insurance benefits to have the re constructive surgery on her chest. She was supposed to have back surgery for her MS but her insurance ran out before she good so she suffers from pain from her back and the still healing re constructive surgery. Somewhere during all of this she has become addicted to her pain medications. She will admit she is addicted and says she wants help. She has talked to her Dr.s and they have told her there isnt anything they can do other then a lower dose but she will just take those in excess to equal the stronger medicine. So here we are and we want to help her and she wants the help but we are at a loss as to how to get her to cut back and then ultimately off the pain meds. She is in constant pain but we dont know if its partly in her head or if its real but the fact that shes saying she wants the help means she knows in her heart something is wrong with how many of the pills she is taking. So does anyone have any ideas on what we can do to help her? Medical help is out of the question because she doesnt have insurance anymore.

I can tell you from experience, quitting pain medication is one of the hardest things to do. I was hooked for 3 years. What got me off the opiates was a medication called suboxone. This can be prescribed by her doctor. What suboxone does is block the opiate receptors in your brain so, if she decides to take some while on the suboxone they will have no affect. I don't know how severe her pain is but, I found that the suboxone did give me the same "feeling" that the pain meds gave me. Also, if the pain is "in her head" you would find out here. This of course works for some, not everyone but, hey its worth speaking to your Dr. or doing some research on

It very well could be that she has real pain that is not helped by standard doses of the given pain meds. I hate to say this, but cancer can sometimes go from the breasts into the back. I knew someone that that happened to and they got addicted to pain meds. By the time the docs found out the cancer had spread, it was too late. MS also can be very painful. That said, yes, people can get addicted to pain meds, but maybe give her some benefit of the doubt on this. She should try to see a pain specialist if she can. Call the public health department and ask about free or low cost clinics. Also she can apply at the ER for financial help if she has to go there. Maybe she could get on Medicaid? She could try going to support groups like Narcotics Anonymous. http://portaltools.na.org/portaltools/MeetingLoc/ You could also try getting her on the Dr. Phil show. I saw a video on youtube about a doctor in England who believes that people with MS and other similar ailments might be helped by B12 shots. It couldn't hurt, if her doctor would allow it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klobLSxv6i0
