Can Alcohol cause leg cramps?
I've always suffered with nocturnal cramping of my right calf even as a child, but I've noticed if I drink any alcohol it exacerbates it a great deal. I had one glass of wine last night and all night the calf muscle was straining to cramp. It did eventually and it leaves the muscle horribly sore for about 3 days after an episode. I don't drink much anyway but i'm just curious as to why it affects it so markedly no matter how little or infrequently I drink. JOMAMO - your answer makes sense now I come to think of it..I haven't been drinking the same amount of water becuase I've been getting headaches as well. So the wine has just made it worse then. lol In true Haz stylee I managed to jump from the bed, knock over the tumbler of water and bellow like a banshee.Reduced mobility in the bowels of Primark is a dangerous thing..surprised you lived to tell the tale :)

try not drinking the night before if that dos"nt help, just put lavender oil on they sores

I don't know if alcohol can do that directly, but I do know that alcohol intake can cause dehydration (it is a diuretic: makes you pee a lot). In turn, dehydration causes muscle cramping. Also, if you don't already take a multivitamin, it may be good to start b/c muscle cramping can often be a sign of a vitamin deficiency (such as potassium and/or calcium)

★★★★ JOMAMO ★★★★
Yes, absolutely, because it leads to dehydration of the long calf muscles(even in small degrees) which is the cause of this type of leg cramp. I had a particularly excruciating episode last week in Chez Jomamo Liverpool (where it is obligatory to have a couple of scoops before bedtime). One of those where you wake from half sleep with the muscle already contracting and there is nothing you can do about it but grip the side of the bed and scream silently so as not to wake the snoring lump next to you. It was agony the next day, had to limp around Primark.
