The beds of my finger and toe nails are purple?
For as long as I can remember all of my finger and toe nail beds have always been purple. Lately I've been having constant migraines that just won't go away and I'm wondering if all of this a blood circulation issue. I'm waiting for insurance from work to kick in before I go to the doctor, but until then, I wanted to see if anyone could help, at least, point me in the right direction in the way of a possible diagnosis. EDIT: I also forgot to mention that for the last few years I have had some pretty nasty edema in both legs. At work, I usually put one leg under my body and it presses against the end of the seat. At the end of 10 minutes there is an indentation of the chair that lasts a good hour, hour and a half. Could that be the cause of the purple nails?

The dusky color could indicate low oxygen content in the blood circulating through your extremities. Or, it could indicate that you have brown pigment in your hands and the rest of your skin. (Are they more "purple" than your mother's nail beds?) If your headaches are just bad headaches and not true migraines, then low oxygen tension could be a cause. If they're true migraines though, then your purple nail beds aren't related to your headaches. u

I am sorry I do not remember the name of the deficiency that dark fingernails and toenails signify. One first thinks you had your nails damaged by heavy objects, and the purple color is blood that is trapped and cannot be removed unless the nails are removed. The newest knowledge from medical scientists is that migraines are caused by a gene on a chromosome. Perhaps your DNA you has had the gene all your life without knowing it, and something triggered it to cause migraines. Whether your purple nails and migraines are linked, I do not know. Try a test! Go to Google and type," Are migraines caused by faulty genes?" Good luck. Harrald
