Can hernias "repair" themselves?
I have recently been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia, which is to be operated on in July. However, over the last couple of days it hasn't been protruding as it had been, could it have gone back into the stomach wall, should I go the docs?

Dr Frank
The fact that less bowel is protruding does not necessarily indicate that the hernial orifice has shrunk.

Elle
My youngest child had this when he was born & it kind of protruded out of his belly button, but only sometimes & there were quite a few times when I thought it had gotten better on it's own. I was told by the consultant at The Children's Hospital that in the first 12 months it may repair itself which it did, however if it hadn't they would have operated. He is now 8 years old. I don't know if it can repair itself on someone older, it sounds like it may just be doing what my son's did and is still there but just gone quiet for a bit. His did repair before he was 12 months old though & he was discharged from the hospital out-patients, thankfully. Why not ring your Dr's surgery & explain to the receptionist your dilemma, get an appointment & get yourself checked over. Your Dr. can then best advise you. I wish you all the best.

Hi No they cannot repair themselves, don't worry have it operated on to put it right
