Traditionally if you tear an ACL you have severe pain and swelling right away in you knee, where as a meniscus tear causes pain and swelling usually the next day. You tend to have chronic knee pain, but more indicative is that after the swelling goes down if you try to run or cut your knee gives out and swells back up. If you injured it and it swelled right away and you were unable to play sports or do what you were doing you should see a doctor and maybe have an MRI. If it is torn it is up to you to decide if you want to have surgery or not (most people who want to get back to all activities usually do have surgery).
