Walking without a brace after ACL surgery?
Hi there! :) I just had ACL surgery with a patellar graft 3 weeks ago. My surgeon says that I'm his "Superstar Patient" because I'm healing so fast and can do all my exercises so easily. Anyway, I'd like to know some of your experiences with walking WITHOUT the support/immobilization brace for the first time and when you did it. I want to take this stinky thing off and start walking without it. haha. When do you think I can? I'm walking without a limp and everything. Could I switch to wearing a sports brace instead? Thanks for your help!

It's really all up to your surgeon's preference, but I would say probably not until at least 5-6 weeks post-op before you are without any brace. Are you in a straight leg immobilizer or do you have a hinged long leg brace that allows you to bend? My friend who has had a spectacular recovery from ACL surgery had to follow a protocol despite her amazing progress. She was in an immobilizer for 1 week, another long leg hinged brace for 4 weeks, then a sports brace for a few weeks. You can also ask your physical therapist, but your physician's decision comes first. Well, I can't really comment on what it was like coming out of the immobilizer for me since I wasn't doing as well after my knee surgery. My knee was weak and stiff and it would give out, but it got better. I didn't have ACL surgery, but patella realignment and I had to walk with my leg in a straight leg immobilizer for 5 weeks. Then, I got a smaller, hinged knee brace that I wore an additional two months due to poor progress. If you are doing well enough, I would say do a walk through your hallway at home where it's level and safe just to see what it's like walking without it, but definitely continue to wear it at school until you get your physician's approval not to. Good Luck! Sounds like you are having awesome recovery!

I never had ACL surgery, but I did have torn cartilage that required an operation. I had to go through physical therapy and it was quite painful. Even after I was done with PT, I still wore the brace on my knee for about three weeks because I was doing a lot of walking and still in some pain. After the operation, I think I wore the brace for about six to eight weeks before I was comfortable enough to remove it. I would say even though you are a "superstar patient," you should start easy and work your way up. If you have pain when walking, put the brace back on or do not walk as far. It is really your decision. If the doctor says otherwise, do what he says.
