From what I researched, being color blind in one eye is not common at all and the reasons for color blindness of anykind seem to come out the same. they say it's hereditary and it can also come from "shaken baby syndrom" and being exposed to ultraviolet light. Here is some basic "color blind' info. The most common cause of color blindness is genetic inheritance. This is when a particular recessive gene is carried by both parents. It may manifest in them, or they simply may have the trait in their DNA, and it is then passed on to the child where it will manifest itself in a noticeable way. These genes aren't necessarily uncommon as they are passed on to roughly eight percent of the male gender (only half of a percent of females show symptoms). From a genetics standpoint, this is not a shock because the Y chromosome of men is smaller than that of the X chromosome. This means that the genetics that are taken from one bad X chromosome overpower the Y's resistance, whereas two X's would cancel each other out and offer normal vision in most cases. Another cause of color blindness is damage caused by the brain swelling into the occipital lobe from trauma of some form, or from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. This includes damage to the retina from the same type trauma, which is linked directly into the optic nerve and is the main gateway for processing images. The trauma that causes this type of damage is not always, but most often, caused at a young age and can be related to shaken baby syndrome and other serious traumas at this pivotal stage of development. Nevertheless, this still occurs at a lower rate than that of genetic progression. It is possible that damage from an illness such as macular degeneration or diabetes can also cause color blindness in some people. Nevertheless, color blindness is not necessarily a bad thing. Research that was done by the United States Army showed that some people who exhibited certain types of color blindness could identify camouflaged targets more readily than those who had normal cone cells. While the study hasn't been recreated, it stands to reason that because of the genetic nature of most color blindness, it could be an evolutionary "defect" to help people procure food. However, it is also important to note that some forms of color blindness can degenerate into legal blindness, and in certain cases even complete blindness.
