what is epidural lipomatosis?

it's basically an abnormal condition where too much fat lies over the outer protective covering of the spinal cord and puts pressure on the nerves. The word epidural means over the dura mater, which is the outermost layer of the meninges - the protective coverings of the brain and spinal cord. Lipomatosis I assume means something about a fat deposit. This condition is not normal unless you're severely obese or have other contributing factors that affect the chemical reactions inside your body like chronic steroid use or certain medications taken over a long period of time. If the fatty deposits compress the nerves too much, it could lead to some impairment in the way you move (affects the motor nerves) or the way you interpret sensation (sensory nerves) or inhibit your reflex response (connecting nerves). I believe treatment for it is surgical removal of excess fatty deposits and/or switching medication if that was the cause or helping someone lose weight if overall obesity was the cause.

There's a pretty good explanation here: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/474908

Spinal epidural lipomatosis is a rare and complex disorder that can present with progressive neurological deficits. Hypertrophy of adipose tissue located in the spinal epidural space is most commonly associated with long-term steroid use but can be observed in patients with a number of other conditions. As the adipose tissue enlarges, it encroaches on the spinal canal and compresses the neural elements. We have reviewed the literature on SEL and summarize current trends in the management of this condition.
