how long does it take for the swelling to go down from a broke foot?

Spoke
There are lots of events that might qualify as a broken foot. Sprains, fractures of toes, of long bones, of metatarsal bones, heel bone, etc. If you have fractured a bone, the swelling is not as much a concern as the pain and immobility you will experience from the fracture. You need to see a doctor for that. If it's a sprain, follow the advice given about rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE) and the swelling should be down significantly in 24 hours, if you stay off of it. If you persist in walking around on it, the swelling can turn to a sort of concrete type substance and your foot gets glassy and hard. You are in a bad situation at that point and need urgent help. Below is a good article on broken foot/ankle from Mayo Clinic. Take care.

If you pamper it you should see results fairly quickly, although this is only speaking for the swelling. The first 24 hours you should ice it for 10 to 15 minutes, give it a rest for a while, then do this repeatedly. Some find ice cubes to be too bulky and uncomfortable, so they use frozen vegetables or frozen fruit which make good ice packs. Don't put the ice directly on the swell but place a light cloth or towel over your foot before putting the ice on to alleviate possible frost bite. If you can take Advil or Tylenol for this then do so to help the swelling and/or pain. A broken foot should be casted once the swelling goes down or a doctor determines it's time, usually within a few days depending on the swelling. Keep this elevated as well, maybe on a chair or ottoman. Good luck.
