Why are my knees turning purple?
Lately during practice and meets (i'm a swimmer), my knees have been turning purple. It's only during the really hard sets at practice, and i'm kind of worried about it. Why are they turning purple, and is it a bad thing?

The change of color could come from the skin it self or the blood circulation. Now.... If you'd have bruised both of your knees you'd probably not have asked here. It could be as simple as the temperature of the water causing it. The blood-flow increases as you get warm, upping the tempo of the exercises - the water holds a lower temperature. There's also something called "spider veins". That is observed as purple lines in the skin as the blood backs up in the veins. Veins don't allow blood to flow backward thanks to valves regulating the flow in the right direction. The veins twist and swell and cause a spider-web like pattern on the skin. Anyway, to treat your knees well, you could always use natural oils, heat therapy or ice-therapy. Exercise is good, but changes in the skin-color should be seen in a greater picture. When the exercises get more vigorous, do you notice anything else like getting short of breath (more than normal of course), feeling lightheaded etc. If you notice changes of the skin-color elsewhere - example lips, nail-beds - you should have it examined and evaluated by a professional.
