What is this pain under my left knee cap?
So in my past soccer game I got tripped and landed right on my knee cap. Now I have a sharp pain directly under my knee cap (I believe it is called a pateller tendon) and it bothers me when I run.

Hi, I am a physical therapist. If you landed on your knee cap I guess you could have an acute form of tendonitis but patella tendonitis generally occurs over time. You could have irritated the back of the patella from the compression. If you are having pain the first thing you should do is start applying ice to the knee, 10 minutes at a time a few times a day. If it hurts to run, stop running! Avoid any aggravating activities. If the pain continues, see a doctor to get an x-ray and ask to see a physical therapist. See your health care provider as soon as possible (orthopedic or sports doctor). The knee is a hinge joint formed by two bones (femur and tibia) and is held together by four ligaments (medial collateral ligament, lateral collateral ligament, anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament). The kneecap normally slides in a groove (trochlea) in the thighbone (femur) as the knee bends and straightens. If the kneecap is improperly tilted or malaligned in the groove, pain can occur. Maltracking occurs if the kneecap partially comes out of the groove as the knee is bend and straightened. This is called subluxation, and it can cause pain and a sense of "giving-way." Some people are born predisposed to developing these conditions, while others develop it as a result of injury or muscular weakness. Typically the initial treatment for malalignment is physical therapy for specific stretching and strengthening exercises, along with trials of selective taping and or bracing. Otherwise, acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen may be taking as long as you feel significant pain until you see a doctor. I hope this helps you. And good luck.
