Shin splints wont go away... ?
This summer I have been training for cross country to make team. They make us run everyday Mon-Sun. And about 3 weeks into training I started getting shin splints and at first they didn't hurt that bad, I thought it was fine and my coaches told me it was common and that I should continue to run just keep icing. So I did, and now im 6 weeks into practice and my shins hurt so bad it hurts to walk. My running speed has decreased immensely, I went from being the person in front to being the person lagging behind. And I didn't even make the first time trial because of this. It is soooo much harder to run because my shins feel like someone set fire underneath my skin. My next time trial is in 2 weeks and I feel like there is absolutely no way I will make it. Its pretty depressing, but my shins hurt sooo bad. Im supposed to be at practice right now but when I woke up it hurt too bad to even think about running. I do the whole heat and ice thing, I do shin exercises, I where those black shin bands around my shins while im running, I got super feet arch support, I dont know why it wont go away. I want to make the team SOOOO bad, but there is no way I will like this :( What should I do?

I have had shin splints/stress fractures my whole life in one of my shins...suffered severe shin splints/borderline stress fracture in Marine Corps boot camp (we ran in boots back then). After I got out and started running again started getting them again...so some people are just prone to them. By talking to experts at a local running foot wear store I got a pair of shoes that really helped...also i would roll a piece of foam tubing up and down my shins after running (even when they didn't hurt). Over time and much rest in between injuries I have been able to manage it with just watching how much i run (now I am more into intervals and speed work and only run about 3 miles for distance as my max. Anyway good luck. Bottom line, if they really hurt the only thing that fixes them is down time.

You have damaged your body and it needs time to heal. Stop running for a few weeks. Get plenty of protein in your diet and drink plenty of water. Stretch your shins and calves daily. When it starts to feel better, you can start doing bucket handle exercises (sit on a counter or a table or something so that your feet hang free, then place the handle of a bucket on top of your foot and lift it. Use very little weight at first and increase very slowly). You may also want to take a look at your running technique. You may be pounding the ground too hard. Ideally you want to roll into each step, letting your knees and ankles cushion your body weight. Once you start to feel better you can go back out and kick some *ss, but if you keep pushing yourself, you will have pain for the rest of your life.
