My rottweiler has a cut pad on his back right foot and it will not heal. Help Please!!!?
Long story short I bought a pure breed rottweiler and I have had him since he was 2 months old. His back right paw does not have fur on it in some places because the owner before me aka the breeder let a carpet string wrap around it. She didnt notice it till it was to late and so the hair doesnt grow properly. I took him to the let before I paid for him and he said that everything checks out and the paw is fine. So life went on and I have had him since but around 4 months ago he cut it serverly on his pad and on the side. I have tried everything the vet has said and nothing will work. He has been on antibiotics and everything you can imagin. As of now he told me I have three choices. 1. I can keep wrapping his foot with tape and giving him his meds for the rest of his life. 2. Cut it off. 3. put him down. I no that option 2 and 3 are not a choice. The vet claims that since the carpet string that was on it was so tight it damaged the capilaries and the foot will never heal. This seems odd to me because the only cut left is on the side but this has been going on for at least 4 months. Is the a way to get this to heal. I have tried the cone and anything to keep him from licking it but he always finds away and then it just gets torn open again. If there was some kind of walking cast with holes in it to let air get to it to help heal I think it would help because the tape and wrap do not let any air in. If there was anything I can do please let me know. I really need help.

Have you discussed the walking cast with the vet? It sounds like a good idea. I think you may want to try another vet. Also maybe he should be on some kind of dog supplement like the one I hear about on the radio dynovite which supports dog health. I know in humans healing an infection has a lot to do with what you eat. Like if you eat candy all day it's bad for an infection, but protein is good. Also antibiotics deplete the stores of B vitamins which are needed also to heal infections. I would find a vet who understands complementary forms of medicine like nutrition and is also open to ideas like a walking cast. I think a different vet could be the answer. As a cat owner who has had sick cats, I know the quality of the vet can make a huge difference. I'm not saying your vet isn't good, but maybe doesn't know things that could help.

If you have a farm store near you or even a pet supply store, get yourself some betadine solution. Mix a little bit in a bucket of warm water and soak his foot daily, let air dry. Then I would wrap it with some pads, bag balm, and then what is called Vet Wrap. If this has been going on for 4 months, It probably wont close up properly anymore. But it should heal and you will just have scar tissue there. you could try a loose muzzle so he cant chew off the bandages.. Other wise, I would see a different Vet and get a second opinion. You are not out of luck, something can be done. :)
