How long does it take for a blocked ear to go away?
So i'm still getting over this cold i got last week, and the sneezing and coughing are almost gone. Now for me in the second stage of a cold its normal for me to sometimes get blocked ears, because of the extra mucus going into them or whatever. There is no pain, just a general feeling of 'blocked-ness' and its very annoying, as if someone shoved a chunk of foam inside my ear. I can still hear, but i only have about 70% of my hearing.
I wanna know, is there any temporary remedies to make me hear again, and how long will it take for the blocked-ness to go away???

Taking an over the counter decongestant can make this part of the recovery process happen faster.

Squelia Macrawr,
You would be advised to have the external auditory canal of your ear examined by a medical professional with an auroscope to exclude wax from being the cause. To further understand blocked ears and how they happen, I shall explain the anatomical structure of the ear, as it applies to this case. There is a canal that connects the front wall of the middle ear to the pharynx, this is called the Eustachian tube. Generally, the Eustachian tube is closed, but it opens sometimes to let out small amounts of air in order to equalize the pressure in the middle ear and the atmosphere. At times, the Eustachian tube becomes blocked due to allergies, colds or sinusitis, sometimes the ear appears clogged when a sore throat is the cause. Mucus and pus gets entrapped, causing swelling, congested ears, pain, and impaired hearing. There are several methods which you can use to open a blocked Eustachian tube. Some methods will work while others may not, so you can try out a few of these time-tested tricks and remedies to unblock your ear and relieve pain. Yawn or swallow hard. This stimulates the muscles and opens the ears. You could also close your mouth, hold your nose, and GENTLY blow as if you were blowing the air out of your ears. This can also help open a blocked ear. Chewing gum or opening your jaws wide can also be attempted. To soothe an aching ear, place a heating pad or warm cloth on it. If these tricks don’t work, you could try some of these home remedies. Take warm water mixed with common salt, and place a small quantity on your palm. Slowly inhale this water so that it goes into your nostril and then breathe through your mouth or better still hold your breath. Turn your head to the side where it is blocked. Do this a few times. You could, alternatively, heat one or two garlic cloves in sesame oil and put a few drops in each ear, allowing it to settle for some time. Then, hold a soft cloth over the ear, and lie down facing the ground. This will help clear your ears; you can do this several times to ensure that there is no residual wax or debris in your ear that can facilitate infection. If wax is the cause, then there are similar methods, other than syringing, which can be used to liquefy the wax and disperse it. Syringing should be undertaken as a last resort, as this often leads to having to repeat the procedure at regular intervals thereafter.
