what is treatment for dog with congestive heart failure?

I have had several senior dogs (13-16 yrs.) who developed congestive heart failure. Coughing and general lethargy were some of their symptoms. In most cases as the heart fails to pump properly and works harder CHF will cause fluid accumulation in the lungs and sometimes in other parts of the pet's body. Common treatments are medications such as diuretics to help with fluid build up (retention), and with special diets (some vets will give you recipes to prepare at home) or recommend specialized dog foods prepared for dogs with specific nutritional needs to treat whatever problem the pet is having. Most vets carry these lines of special dog foods. With a CHF pet one of the main things is to limit sodium intake which, of course, helps with fluid retention. In younger dogs, CHF can even by caused by heart worms. In some of those cases, the CHF can be reversed if the heart worm treatment is initiated quickly enough (prior to irreversible damage) and if the pet successfully tolerates the treatment. Two very good web sites for research on CHF or any pet illness or problems are: http://www.webvet.com and http://www.vetinfo.com. Good luck with your research and with your pet!

You should ask this in the pet section and/or take your dog to the vet.
