High blood pressure in a skinny teen?
I am a 15 year old male. I am 5 foot 7 and underweight for my size. One day I was in a pharmacy with my mom and we decided to have our blood pressures checked out. My moms pressure was normal, however when I checked mine, it says I have a 132 systolic pressure. There was a label on the machien and it says that normal is 120 and under, and high normal is 130-140. My diastolic pressure was 88 and it says on the machine anything under 90 is normal. thinknig back, I do eat alot of fast food and not alot of fruits and vergetables. I dont excersise alot, but I do have days where i do. Just not frequently. Despite this, I am very skinny. I care about my health alot. Do you think this is just a fluke, or is this a sign of a more serious problem? and I thought only overweight or obese people get high blood pressure. What do you think is the cause of this? I get alot of sleep at night so sleep isn't an issue. I will try to excersie more and eat healthier.

Dont be fooled when people say that teens are unlikely to have hypertension only the obese ones. Your blood pressure reading are considered hypertensive at your age. The ranges you read are for adults. I am 15 years old and female. 5 foot 5 and normal weight. I have had hypertension for 5 years. I first saw the cardioogist when I wass 10. He didnt decide to medicate me until 3 years passed . Now I have mitral valve regurgitation and mild left ventricular hypertrophy)(thickening of the left ventricle because the heart got overworked from having hypertension). Now, dont get scared from just one reading. Buy a home blood pressure kit and check it daily. Just to tell you how hard it is to get a doctor to diagnose you as hypertensive at such a young age, I'l tell you what I had to do. Apart from waiting 3 years, I had to do a calender with ever day of the month and on every day I would write two blood pressure readings, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Even after doing this, it was when my cardiologist discovered some cardiac hypertrophy that he dicided to medicate me. He said,"I'm going to start medicating her because the heart is starting to fatten up a bit." Those exact words. Hypertension is a serious illness especially when it starts at a yound age. You need to tell your mom . Please take this seriously. If you have any questions please do NOT hesitate to email me. Im here for you! I take medications and I take a wrist blood pressure monitor to school and I one I took it at lunch and it read 166/90 something. DO NOT let it get to there. I wish you the best.

It is not abnormal for your BP to go up to 130/90 levels if you are under a lot of stress, either physical or emotional. Did you get into any arguments before you had it read? Did you just finish exercising? Did you eat something very salty? It is only a problem and abnormal if your BP is elevated for no good reason and remains elevated. BP is something that is checked every time you visit the doctor, along with your pulse and your temperature. If you doctor hasn't said anything to you about it then it is probably nothing to be worried about. However, if you are concerned you could try buying an automatic blood pressure cuff and test your BP at various times throughout the day for a few days to see if it remains elevated most of the time. It's hard to tell if you have a problem if you have no symptoms from just one reading. It could also be caused by medications. Are you taking anything? Ask your pharmacist if your medications could be raising your blood pressure. Smoking will also increase it. Despite what you may have heard elsewhere, obesity is not the only cause of high BP but is only a factor that can increase your chances of developing it. It is possible to develop high BP due to a genetic predisposition for it. To understand all of the possible causes of high BP you need to understand what blood pressure is to begin with, so I suggest doing some research on the heart and circulatory system so you can better understand what might cause high BP and why.

If you were talking while having your blood pressure taken that could be the reason. You shouldn't speak while doing it. You're supposed to sit for a few minutes beforehand also just so you're relaxed. I think it's a fluke.
