Mommy to 3 great kids!
Is a fasting blood sugar of 105 bad?
Ok here is a little background first. I just had my baby 4 weeks ago and while I was pregnant I was diagnose with gestational diabetes. It was controlled with my diet. I refused to take insulin which they tried to give me at first because it made my sugar drop way to low and I felt like i was dying. Well I just had my check up yesterday and they rechecked my sugar through my blood work and my doctor called this morning and said that my sugar was 105 which was not good. So my question is really how bad is this sugar. In my opinion its not that bad and i have been reading things on the internet that said anything between 70 and 110 are normal. Any advice will be appreciated.

105 is considered a little high, but watching your diet and making small adjustments will bring it down. With three children you are not going to need an exercise program. There are a few things I would recommend eliminating completely. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup, HFCS, top the list. Table sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Since the introduction of HFCS, about thirty-five years ago, the incidence of fatty liver disease and diabetes has tripled. Fructose is now the number one source of calories in America. It is in thousands of "foods", from catsup to bread to soft drinks to baby formula. If you want a healthy sweetener, I suggest stevia, liquid with no additives, or lohan. Then, to be on the safe side, I would suggest eliminating all soy, corn, canola and cottonseed. Most are genetically modified, GM. No human test has ever shown any GM to be safe. Notice those are the vegetable oils. They are in margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings and a couple of thousand other packaged "foods". I suggest butter and coconut oil. Take a vitamin D supplement. Most Americans are D deficient.

105 is like perfect. I am a diabetic. Diabetics dream of a number that good

A fasting blood glucose level of 105 mg/dL puts you in the realm of pre-diabetes. This is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. (According to the ADA (American Diabetes Association) a fasting blood sugar level in a non-diabetic should be between 70 and 99 mg/dL.) Of course, because you were diagnosed with gestational diabetes with your latest pregnancy, things may not have 'settled' back to 'normal'. Your doctor may wish to carry out one or more tests to see exactly what's going on. You may have already done one of the tests, called an OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) when your gestational diabetes was diagnosed, but it may be worth your doctor having this test repeated. S/he may also request a HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin [hemoglobin, if you're one of my American cousins]), which will give an idea of what your average blood sugar level has been like over the previous 90-120 days.

105 is normal

I'm not sure as 105 is what mine normally runs even when I'm not fasting
