Does metformin stop working after some time?
For the people who have taken metformin after a long time. I would like to know if metformin loses efficacy/efficiency after some time? Did you have to change medicines or increase dosage of metformin? Does the body become tolerant to metformin?

I don't think that Metformin stops working. It could be your lifestyle or as you may know this is a progressive disease. I would seriously try the following; There are 4 key steps to controlling glucose levels : 1) EXERCISE- Walking is fine but Nordic Walking is Great. Exercise also lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and lowers Blood Pressure. Google it.Exercise is Non-Negotiable !!!Thats why it is Number 1 on the list. 2) Knowledge- http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.ph… This is a great site for info 3) Meds. Metformin to start.Never , ever take Actos or Avandia. They may kill you. Bone fractures, heart problems and what diabetics really don't need is that they change Bone Stem Cells to Fat Cells. Also never ever take Onglyza or Januvia . They can can inhibit the bodys immune system and let cancer spread. 4) Diet- A low carb diet is in order. I can't count carbs so I use Mendosa's Glycemic Index Diet. Great for the whole family. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm I hope that you do a low glycemic diet. Also meds. can't do it alone . Exercise is as important as drugs. I have been on it for 11 yrs. My Hba1c is 5.2. So it's still working. But these good numbers did not start until I started to exercise daily . I Nordic Walk 1 1/2 hours a day , rain or shine. I use to take Glimepiride and metformin but since exercising I stopped taking the 3 mg. of Glimepiride.(Amaryl) Take care TIN
